ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Banj Brdo — also known as Šehitluci — is the wooded hill that rises immediately south of Banja Luka, close enough to the centre to walk to and high enough to see the whole city from above. A forest path climbs through the trees to a stone WWII monument at the summit, and from the clearing beside it the city opens out below: the line of the Vrbas, the green boulevards, the rooftops of the centre and the fortress, and the hills of the Krajina beyond. It is the best single viewpoint over Banja Luka, and the easiest way to step out of the city into green space for an hour or two.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You walk south from the centre, cross the river and pick up the path that climbs Banj Brdo through oak and pine forest. The climb is steady but not steep, and the path is shaded and quiet — within minutes the city is below you and the air is cooler. After about half an hour you reach the summit clearing, where a tall stone monument to the fallen of World War II stands among the trees. From the clearing the panorama opens: the Vrbas threading through the city, the bridges and boulevards laid out in a grid, the fortress visible at the centre, and the wider valley and hills of the Krajina closing the horizon. You can rest on the benches in the clearing, walk the forest tracks that run along the ridge, and then descend the way you came. The whole outing is a relaxed half-day from the centre, and most of it is spent in the woods.

A tall stone WWII monument at the summit, one of the region’s characteristic post-war memorials, standing in a forest clearing.
A shaded forest path through oak and pine, close enough to the centre to walk to and back in a half-day.
A green escape within the city — the hill is quiet, cool and wooded, a contrast to the busy centre below.
The view over the Vrbas valley and the Krajina hills, which puts the city’s setting in the wider landscape into perspective.
Free, unscheduled and open year-round — no ticket, no opening hours, just a path up a hill.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Banj Brdo is a public wooded hill with no entrance fee and no opening hours; the path is open year-round. The climb from the edge of the city to the summit clearing takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes at an easy pace, with a gentle to moderate gradient on a forest track. Wear flat, grippy shoes — the path can be slippery after rain, and in winter snow and ice can make the upper section tricky. Bring water in summer, as there is no shade-free stretch but the climb is warming. The monument clearing has benches and is a good place to rest. The hill is safe and well-used by locals walking and running, but as with any wooded hill, go in daylight. The view is best in the clear light of morning or late afternoon, when the city and the river are lit from the side.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Most of Banja Luka is experienced at street level, among its boulevards and riverside walks. Banj Brdo is the place that shows you the whole city at once — how it sits along the Vrbas, how green it is, and how the fortress and the old core sit at its heart. It also gives a quiet, wooded contrast to the centre, which is valuable in a city whose best features are its green setting and its river. For a visitor, an hour or two on the hill is the simplest way to see Banja Luka as a whole, and the easiest break from the streets.
