ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Cathedral of Saint Bonaventure is the Catholic cathedral of Banja Luka, the seat of the local diocese, and one of the most prominent modern religious buildings in the city. It stands in the centre, a short walk from the river, and is recognisable by its twin towers and steep red roof. The present cathedral was consecrated in 2001 on the site of an earlier church that was destroyed during the war, and it serves as both a working place of worship and a symbol of the Catholic community’s return and rebuilding in the city.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

A Catholic church dedicated to Saint Bonaventure stood on this site from the late 19th century, serving the Catholic community of Banja Luka under Austro-Hungarian and later Yugoslav rule. During the 1992–95 war the church was destroyed. After the war the decision was taken to build a new cathedral on the site as the seat of the Banja Luka diocese, and the present Cathedral of Saint Bonaventure was consecrated in 2001. The building is modern in design — a spacious interior, twin bell towers and a prominent red roof — and was conceived as a sign of the Catholic community’s renewal in the city after the destruction of the war years.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The twin towers and red roof — the cathedral’s silhouette is one of the most distinctive on the Banja Luka skyline; view it from the square in front.

02

The interior — a bright, modern space, simpler and more spacious than the city’s older religious buildings, with contemporary decoration.

03

The site and memorial — the cathedral stands where the earlier church stood, and its presence is itself a record of destruction and rebuilding.

04

The square — the open space in front of the cathedral is a calm spot in the city centre and a good place to take in the façade.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The Cathedral of Saint Bonaventure is the Catholic third of Banja Luka’s three great places of worship — alongside the Ottoman Ferhadija and the Orthodox Christ the Saviour cathedral — and together they are the clearest single expression of the city’s multi-faith character. As a building it is a record of the war and of the rebuilding that followed, and for a visitor it completes the picture of a city whose skyline is shared by minaret, Orthodox dome and Catholic tower.
