COUNTRY GUIDE
A compact green country of Alpine peaks, limestone karst, Adriatic coast and thermal valleys — the only nation bridging the Alps, the Mediterranean and the Pannonian plain.
ABOUT THE COUNTRY
Slovenia is the green half of the northern Adriatic: a small country where Alpine peaks, limestone karst plateaus, a short Adriatic coast and the rolling thermal valleys of the Pannonian plain meet within a few hours’ drive. Our Slovenian atlas is organised into four editorial regions — Alpine Slovenia, Ljubljana and Central Slovenia, Mediterranean and Karst Slovenia, and Thermal Pannonian Slovenia — each with its own destinations, from Lake Bled and the Soča Valley to the Venetian coast at Piran and the spa towns of the east. The geographic foundation is in place; fuller destination guides are being written as we travel.
This country already includes detailed destination, attraction, itinerary, route and practical travel coverage. Specialist layers and imagery will continue to grow.

THINGS TO DO
FOOD & DRINK
The lakeside terraces of the eastern shore — the grand-hotel café life of the resort era, with the water and the island in view from the table
The Bled cream cake — blejska kremšnita — the town’s signature dessert, made at the lakeside Park Hotel since 1953 and served across the cafés of the shore
The gostilnas of the town and the Ribno area — traditional Gorenjska cooking, from trout and game to štruklji and potica, in the quieter streets back from the water
The cafés and gostilnas around Ribčev Laz — the busiest orientation point at the eastern end of the lake, with the bridge and the church in view from the tables
The mountain huts on the trails — the Koča na Vojah above the gorge and the Koča pri Savici below the waterfall, serving homemade mountain food in the season
The local products of the Bohinjsko/From Bohinj brand — cheese and other alpine fare from the valley’s farms and high pastures, including the cheese-making on the Zadnji Vogel meadow
The restaurants and cafés of the Kranjska Gora centre — the busiest tables of the valley, concentrated around the resort core and the pedestrian stretch of the village
The mountain huts of the surrounding valleys and the Vršič road — homemade mountain food in the season, each hut with its own schedule; check current opening arrangements directly
PLACES TO STAY
