ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Sassi are the two ancient districts of Matera, the Sasso Caveoso and the Sasso Barisano, where the houses are carved into the limestone slopes of the Gravina gorge and stacked one above the other in a cascade of stone. They are among the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world, with evidence of occupation going back over nine thousand years, and they are the reason Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sasso Caveoso, on the south side, is the more ruined and the more atmospheric, its cave houses opening onto the gorge; the Sasso Barisano, on the north side, is the more restored, with hotels, restaurants and museums in the caves. Walking down into the Sassi from the modern city above is to step into a different world, a stone city of caves and cobbled lanes that has no parallel in Europe.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Sassi have been inhabited since the Neolithic period, and the cave dwellings were dug into the soft limestone of the Gravina gorge over the centuries by the people of Matera. By the 18th century the two districts held some 15,000 people in the caves, with the animals housed below and the people above, and the overcrowding and the lack of sanitation made them one of the poorest places in Italy. In 1952 the Italian government passed a law to evacuate the Sassi, and the population was moved to new housing on the plateau above, leaving the cave districts abandoned. The Sassi remained empty and decaying until the 1980s, when a slow restoration began; in 1993 they were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first in southern Italy, and the caves were gradually converted into homes, hotels and museums. Matera was the 2019 European Capital of Culture.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The Sasso Caveoso — the southern district, the more ruined and atmospheric, with the cave houses opening onto the gorge.
The Sasso Barisano — the northern district, the more restored, with hotels, restaurants and museums in the caves.
The cave houses — the Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario and the Casa Grotta del Casalnuovo, restored to show how the cave families lived.
The cobbled lanes — the steep streets and stairways that thread the two districts, with the gorge below.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Sassi are the reason Matera is what it is — a city of caves inhabited for nine thousand years, abandoned for its poverty and restored for its history, and now the most singular urban landscape in Italy. For a visitor, walking down into the Sassi is the single most disorienting and most memorable experience the city offers, because there is nothing else in Europe that looks like it.
