ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Built by the Habsburgs between 1692 and 1780 atop a Roman and medieval site, the Petrovaradin Fortress anchors the Danube’s defence line against the Ottomans — and never fired its guns in a serious siege. Its Upper Town holds the barracks, the clock tower with the reversed faces, the wine cellars dug into the rock (the fortress’s own winery reopened recently) and the summer art colony; the underground system, 16 kilometres of galleries on four levels, is visited on guided tours. The plain between fortress and city, the Lower Town, is a protected baroque suburb.
