ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Arslanagić Bridge — Arslanagića most — is a humpbacked Ottoman stone bridge that spans the Trebišnjica a short walk downstream of Trebinje’s centre. Built in the 16th century, it is the finest piece of Ottoman engineering in the town: two arches of pale stone rising to a central crest, with no railing and a profile that mirrors the famous bridges of Mostar and Višegrad on a smaller, gentler scale. What makes the bridge remarkable is not only its form but its survival. In the 1970s a hydroelectric dam threatened to drown it under a reservoir; the bridge was dismantled stone by stone, each block numbered, and rebuilt at its present site. To stand on it today is to stand on a bridge that was moved to save it — a quiet monument to a deliberate act of preservation.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The bridge was built in the second half of the 16th century, in the great period of Ottoman bridge-building in the Balkans, and is traditionally attributed to the endowment of a local Ottoman official, Arslan-aga, whose name it carries. It originally spanned the Trebišnjica upstream of Trebinje, carrying the road toward Dubrovnik, and for four centuries it was a working crossing on one of the main routes between the interior and the coast. In the 1960s and 70s the construction of the Gorica hydroelectric dam on the Trebišnjica raised the water level of the river and threatened to submerge the bridge. Rather than lose it, the authorities dismantled the bridge in 1972, numbered every stone, stored them, and rebuilt the bridge at a new site downstream of the town, where it now stands. The rebuilt bridge faithfully reproduces the original form, and it remains one of the clearest examples in the region of a historic structure deliberately relocated to save it.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The two-arch humpbacked profile — a single curved silhouette of pale stone, smaller than Stari Most but built on the same Ottoman principle; view it from the riverbank to see the full arch.

02

The numbered stones — look closely at the masonry: the blocks were dismantled, numbered and reassembled, and the bridge is a documented reconstruction rather than a structure that always stood here.

03

The Trebišnjica setting — the bridge spans the clear, slow river among green banks; the water level is now controlled by the upstream dam, and the banks are a calm place to walk.

04

The view toward the town — from the bridge you look upstream toward the rooftops and minaret of Trebinje, with the hills of the plain closing the horizon.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The Arslanagić Bridge matters as both architecture and memory. As architecture it is the finest Ottoman bridge in Trebinje and a small sibling of the great stone bridges of Mostar and Višegrad. As memory it is one of the clearest examples in Bosnia & Herzegovina of a historic structure deliberately saved from destruction — taken apart, carried and rebuilt so that it could keep spanning a river. For a visitor it is the place where the town’s Ottoman past and its modern care for that past meet in a single, graceful span of stone.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The bridge stands a short walk downstream of Trebinje’s old town along the river promenade; it is a public crossing. Confirm current access and any seasonal maintenance before a dedicated visit.
Surface
The stone is worn smooth and becomes slippery when wet — shoes with grip are essential, as with all old stone bridges.
Best Time
Early morning and late afternoon are quietest and give the best light on the arch; the riverbank beside it is a calm place to sit at any time.
Context
The bridge is an easy walk from Kastel and the main square; combine it with a stroll along the Trebišnjica promenade.
