ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Hercegovačka Gračanica is the white church that crowns the hill immediately above Trebinje, visible from almost anywhere in the town as a cluster of domes and a slender bell tower rising from the green slope. It is a Serbian Orthodox monastery church, completed in 2000 and modeled on the celebrated 14th-century Gračanica monastery in Kosovo, and it stands on the hillside where Trebinje’s beloved poet Jovan Dučić is buried. The church itself is a careful, beautiful copy of a medieval original, but most visitors come for the setting: the terraces around the monastery open the finest panorama over Trebinje, the Trebišnjica and the vineyard plain, and at the end of the day the hillside is where the town gathers to watch the light go down.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The idea of building a monastery church on the hill above Trebinje, in the image of the medieval Gračanica monastery in Kosovo, took shape in the late 1990s, and the church was completed and consecrated in 2000. It is a deliberate evocation of one of the most celebrated monuments of medieval Serbian architecture: the same compact cross-in-plan form, the same lead-covered domes, the same pale stone walls and slender windows. The remains of Jovan Dučić, the Trebinje-born poet and diplomat who died in the United States in 1943, were brought back to the monastery grounds and buried there, and a bell tower was added beside the church. Although the building is modern, it was conceived as a continuation of a much older tradition, and it has quickly become the visual symbol of the town.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The church itself — a faithful evocation of the medieval Gračanica, with leaded domes, pale stone walls and a calm interior of frescoes and icons; step inside before going to the terraces.
The panorama over Trebinje — from the monastery terraces the whole town opens out below: the rooftops, the Trebišnjica, the fortress and the vineyard plain to the hills.
The grave of Jovan Dučić — the Trebinje poet is buried in the monastery grounds, and the site is a place of local pilgrimage and pride.
The bell tower — the slender tower beside the church gives the complex its silhouette on the skyline and frames the view from the town below.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Hercegovačka Gračanica is the building that gives Trebinje its modern silhouette, and the place that gives the town its best view of itself. As architecture it is a careful, loving copy of one of the great medieval Serbian churches, placed where it can be seen from every street. As a viewpoint it is the one place that shows Trebinje whole — the river, the fortress, the plain and the hills in a single glance. For a visitor it is both a destination and a perspective: the place to understand how the town sits in its landscape.
