ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Umag’s old town is a fifteen-minute walk and a thousand years deep: a small peninsula joined to the mainland by a short bridge, ringed by harbour walls, packed with Venetian-era lanes, and crowned by the bell tower of the Church of the Assumption. Everything the town was before the resorts — fishing port, border fortress, Venetian outpost — is inside this tight ring.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Umag enters history as a Roman settlement, then a Venetian fishing and trading port — the last meaningful harbour before the Istrian coast turns toward Trieste. Its position on the borderlands made it a fortress town: walls and towers against pirates and raids, changed hands through the Venetian, Austrian and Italian periods, and carried the 20th century’s border shifts more than once — the iron curtain ran just up the coast for a generation. The town walls survive in fragments wrapped into the old town’s houses; the church tower survives intact.
