Evening at a Croatia Open Night Session
Late-July night tennis under the pines at the Goran Ivanišević stadium — the ATP clay night that makes Umag the loudest town in Croatia.

Cities & Culture
Istria’s northwesternmost town, a harbour and resort near the Italian border.
Umag is Istria’s northwesternmost town — a compact Venetian-era harbour on its own small peninsula, the gateway to and from Italy, and every late July the centre of the tennis world’s clay season when the Croatia Open fills the Stella Maris stadium. Beyond the old town, the coast runs northwest to the Savudrija lighthouse through resort bays, rocky coves and olive groves that reach almost to the Slovenian border.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Umag developed as a Venetian fishing and trading port on the northwestern tip of Istria, and its old town preserves the medieval street pattern and harbour walls. Its modern growth came with tourism and the marina, and it remains close enough to Italy that the border crossing at Savudrija is a short drive away.

ITINERARIES
NATURE & WILDLIFE
The northwest Istrian coast is the softest landscape on the peninsula — low rocky coves, pine woods and thousands of centuries-old olive groves reaching to the Slovenian border. The shallow northern Adriatic warms early and holds seahorses and small octopus in the rocky shallows; dolphins pass the cape at Savudrija. The cape itself is a migration watchpoint in spring and autumn, with the lighthouse floodlit against the birds’ flyway.
PLAN YOUR VISIT
Umag sits at the top of the Istrian Y, about 40 minutes from Poreč and under an hour from Trieste and Piran across the nearby borders. The old town is a short walk from the car parks at the peninsula base.
The old town and the beach strip are on foot via the promenade; the Savudrija cape needs a car or a bike. Resort shuttles and taxis run the Stella Maris strip in season.
A day covers the old town, the beaches and the Savudrija sunset; Umag also works as a three-country base for the borderlands.
May–June and September for quiet coast; late July for the Croatia Open festival week; August for peak beach season.
Water shoes for the pebble and rocky entries, a layer for the exposed Savudrija cape, and tournament-week patience — everything books out.
