ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Ogorjelica is the highest ground on Jahorina — the upper ridge of the massif, rising to around 1,916 metres, where the ski slopes and the forest give way to a more open, exposed mountain landscape of grass, rock and long views. It is not a single sharp summit so much as the highest stretch of the Jahorina ridge: a broad, rolling crest that forms the top of the mountain and the watershed between the slopes that fall toward Sarajevo and Pale and the valleys that drop away to the south. For a skier, Ogorjelica is the upper reach of the resort — the high ground the lifts approach and the slopes descend from. For a summer walker it is the reward of the climb: the point where the trees thin, the wind opens, and the view spreads across the Dinaric mountains to the peaks of Bjelašnica, Treskavica and the Romanija range, and down toward the Sarajevo valley. It is the place where Jahorina is most fully a mountain rather than a resort — the wild, upper layer that sits above the developed slopes and gives the massif its height and its character.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Ogorjelica is a natural feature rather than a built one, and its history is the geological history of the Jahorina massif itself — a block of the Dinaric Alps lifted along the fault lines that structure the mountains of Bosnia & Herzegovina. The ridge has long been used as the upper pasture and gathering ground of the mountain, and in the modern era it became the upper reach of the ski area, the high ground that the resort’s lifts were built to reach. Its name and its elevation are recorded in the standard geographic and mountaineering references to Jahorina, and it remains the point by which the mountain’s height is measured and its upper landscape is understood.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The high ridge — the broad, open crest of Ogorjelica, the highest ground on Jahorina, where the forest ends and the mountain opens out.
The panoramic views — the long sightlines from the ridge across the Dinaric mountains, taking in Bjelašnica, Treskavica, the Romanija range and the Sarajevo valley.
The transition from forest to open mountain — the change from the pine slopes below to the grass and rock of the upper ridge, the ecological layering of the massif.
The upper reach of the ski area — the high ground from which the winter slopes descend, read in summer as the quiet, snow-free top of the mountain.
The sense of the watershed — the ridge as the divide between the northern slopes toward Sarajevo and Pale and the southern valleys, the geographic logic of the massif.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Ogorjelica is the part of Jahorina that is most fully mountain. The resort below is developed and busy; the ridge above is open, windswept and quiet, and it is where the massif’s height, its views and its wilder character are all felt at once. For a visitor it is the natural objective of a summer walk and the upper reference point of a winter day — the place that makes Jahorina a real peak rather than only a ski hill.
