ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Exploring Neum on foot is the way the town and its short coastline are properly read. The settlement is compact and steep, gathered between the shore of Neum Bay and the hillside above it, and a walk along the waterfront promenade, the coast road and the small headlands of the bay takes in the whole of it in a slow morning or afternoon. The walk begins on the promenade, where the town meets the water, and follows the line of the shore through the centre — past the cafés and restaurants, the hotels and the small beaches below. From the centre the route climbs gently onto the coast road, where the bay opens out into a wider view of the Adriatic and the wooded slopes that close the inlet, and the shortness of the country’s coast becomes visible from above. Where the road and the paths allow, the walk reaches out toward the headlands of the Neum peninsula, where the rocky, indented shore shows the karst-meets-sea character of the coast. For a visitor it is the experience that turns a beach stay into an understanding of the place — the town, the bay, the border and the hinterland all read together on foot.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
The walk begins on the waterfront promenade, following the shore of Neum Bay through the centre of town — the cafés and konobas, the hotels and apartments, and the small beaches and bathing platforms below the front. From the promenade the route climbs the short, steep streets of the town onto the coast road above, where the bay is seen from a higher angle: the blue water of the inlet, the wooded slopes on either side, and the town gathered between the shore and the hillside. Along the coast road the walk reaches toward the headlands of the Neum peninsula, where the shore becomes rockier and more indented and the karst of southern Herzegovina meets the sea directly. The return follows the same line back to the waterfront, completing a loop that takes in the promenade, the town, the road above and the headlands. The whole walk is short and manageable, with one brief steep section between the front and the coast road, and it can be done in a couple of hours or stretched into a slower half-day with stops for swimming, coffee and the view.

HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
The waterfront promenade — the walk along the shore of Neum Bay through the centre of town, the public face of the coast.
The view of the bay from the coast road — the inlet seen from above, the water, the wooded slopes and the town between shore and hillside.
The headlands of the Neum peninsula — the rockier, indented shore where the karst meets the sea, the wildest stretch of the short coast.
The shortness of the coast — the awareness, from the road and the headlands, of how brief the country’s outlet to the sea is, framed by the borders.
The town on foot — the steep streets between the waterfront and the hillside, the compact form of Neum read at walking pace.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
The walk is short and mostly manageable, with one brief steep section between the waterfront and the coast road above. Ordinary walking shoes are enough; the promenade is level, and the coast road and headland paths are paved or firm. The walk is self-directed — there is no fixed route, no ticket and no guide required — and it can be shortened to the promenade alone or extended toward the headlands as the visitor chooses. The best light on the bay is in the morning and late afternoon, and the coast road is most pleasant outside the heat of the middle of the day. In July and August the town and the front are at their busiest; June and early September are quieter. No arrangements are needed; the walk is simply the town and its coast taken on foot.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Walking Neum is the experience that makes the place legible. The town is small, but its relationship between shore, hillside, bay and border is best understood on foot, and a walk along the front, the coast road and the headlands is the way the shortness and the character of the country’s only coast are properly felt. For a visitor it turns a beach stay into a reading of the place.
