ABOUT THIS ITINERARY

Two days give Nuremberg its two halves: the Renaissance imperial city above the Pegnitz, and the honest 20th-century story south of the walls — with the museums and the bratwurst cellars filling every gap.

THE SCHEDULE

Day by day

Day 1

The Imperial Old Town

The Kaiserburg at opening, Dürer’s house and the Sebald quarter, the Hauptmarkt at noon, St. Lorenz and the walls in the afternoon, the Pegnitz bridges at dusk.

  1. Morning

    Kaiserburg

    2–2.5 hours

Tower, Deep Well, double chapel and Kemenate at opening — the panorama that orients the whole visit.

  2. Late morning

    Albrecht Dürer House

    1 hour

Down the ramp to the artist’s house — the Agnes tour slot if the timing lands.

  3. Midday

    Hauptmarkt and Frauenkirche

    1 hour

The noon Männleinlaufen, the market stalls, the Schöner Brunnen’s lucky ring — and a bratwurst lunch at the Bratwursthäusle.

  4. Afternoon

    St. Lorenz

    45–60 min

The Stoss Annunciation, the Kraft tabernacle and the rosette — the merchants’ Gothic at its richest.

  5. Late afternoon

    City walls west promenade

    1–1.5 hours

The quiet towers and the moat gardens on the wall’s best stretch, ending at the Frauentor.

  6. Evening

    Henkersteg and the Pegnitz

    Open

The lit covered bridge, the Weinstadel gable and the riverside dinner lanes — the old town’s dusk circuit.

GETTING AROUND

The whole day runs on foot inside the walls — under 8 km, flat except the castle ramp. No transport needed at any leg.

Day 2

Museums, Walls and the Rally Grounds

The Germanisches Nationalmuseum and the Toy Museum in the morning, the Weißgerbergasse lunch stop, and the afternoon’s Documentation Centre and rally grounds — the city’s deep layers in one day.

  1. Morning

    Germanisches Nationalmuseum

    2–2.5 hours

Germany’s largest culture museum — Dürer, Stoss, the instruments and the cloister courtyard.

  2. Midday

    Spielzeugmuseum and the Weißgerbergasse

    1.5 hours

The toy city’s four floors, then lunch in the half-timbered lane’s cafés with a Lebkuchen stop on the way.

  3. Afternoon

    Dokumentationszentrum and the rally grounds

    3–4 hours

U-Bahn out to the Congress Hall: “Fascination and Terror” with the audio guide, then the Zeppelin Field and the Great Road on foot.

GETTING AROUND

Morning legs on foot inside the walls; the afternoon runs on the U-Bahn (U1, Doku-Zentrum stop) — 10 minutes each way. The VGN day ticket covers it; the Nürnberg Card covers it free.

FOOD & DRINK

Where to eat nearby

01

Nuremberg eats Franconian, and three things anchor the table: the Rostbratwurst — small, grilled, marjoram-scented sausages served threes-in-a-bun or the classic “Drei im Weggla” — the Elisenlebkuchen gingerbread the city has baked since the 14th century, and the Franconian beer poured from wooden kegs in cellars older than the walls.

02

The Bratwursthäusle by the Rathaus has grilled its sausages on beechwood since 1313; the gold-roasted Bratwurstglöcklein under the Handwerkerhof arcade is its historic sibling. Both are tourist-right despite the queues — the recipe is the reason the queues exist.

03

The old town’s dining range runs from historic cellar restaurants (the Barfüßer and Hausbrauerei Altstadthof brew their own red beer, Nuremberg’s speciality) to the modern Franconian kitchens around the Weißgerbergasse and the Kraftshof village inn out at the walls’ edge. Lebkuchen is best at the source: the Schmidt and Fraunholz shops sell the Elisen grade all year, and the Christkindlesmarkt stalls roast almonds over the whole December city.

04

Around the Hauptmarkt the market fruit and bakery stalls make a walking breakfast; the Handwerkerhof’s craft-court inns cover a quick medieval-flavoured lunch; and the Gostenhof district west of the walls carries the most inventive young kitchens. Camping travellers: the KNAUS park’s kiosk covers basics, and the U-Bahn puts the old town’s tables at the campsite’s door in fifteen minutes.

HOTELS & STAYS

Where to stay nearby

01

The old town inside the walls (Altstadt) is the right base for a first visit: the castle, the Hauptmarkt and the museums all walkable, hotel-in-historic-house character around the Sebald quarter, and the Pegnitz’s riverside walks at the end of every lane. Prices spike in December.

02

Just outside the walls, the Königstor and Plärrer quarters offer calmer rates with the Altstadt a five-minute walk away; the Garden-quarter (Gartenstadt) hotels near the Messe suit trade-fair visitors.

03

For atmosphere, the Handwerkerhof’s inns and the Weißgerbergasse’s small hotels put you in the medieval streets themselves — small rooms, big location.

04

Camping: the KNAUS Campingpark Nürnberg (4-star, at the Dutzendteich lake by the Reichsparteitagsgelände, open year-round) is the city’s classic site — U-Bahn to the old town in fifteen minutes, the Documentation Centre and the lake walks at the gate. Book early for December; the market weeks fill the whole city’s beds.
