ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Night Watchman is Rothenburg’s institution: Hans-Georg Baumgartner created the character in 1990, and the tour has run every evening since — a cloaked watchman with a lantern and a halberd leading a crowd through the empty town, telling the plague, the siege, the Meistertrunk and the town’s survival with a comedian’s timing and a historian’s spine. It is genuinely good: the hour walks the walls’ gates and the lanes’ dark side, the jokes land in English and German, and the town at night — floodlit towers, empty cobbles — is the version worth seeing. Book nothing: the tour gathers at the Marktplatz at 8 p.m. sharp, small fee, every evening, in any weather.

Where to eat nearby

01

Rothenburg eats Franconian small-town: the Schneeballen (the deep-fried dough “snowballs” the town invented, best fresh at the local bakeries and Hafner-Feinkost rather than day-old in gift-shop windows), the sausages and schäufele roast of the market-square kitchens, and the local Tauber Valley wines poured in the taverns.

02

The market square holds the classic tables: the Zur Höll tavern — the town’s oldest building (900s) and its most atmospheric cellar — serves the schäufele and the local wines under low beams; the Gasthof Goldener Greifen and the Reichs-küchenmeister run the square’s dining rooms. The Ratstrinkstube below the town-clock carries the Meistertrunk legend on its facade.

03

Beyond the square: the Alte Brauhaus’s cellar and the Detwang taverns downriver are the quieter, more local addresses. For coffee, the Café Einzigartig by the market square and the Conditorei’s window cakes are the ritual stops.

04

Camping travellers: the Tauber-Idyll site in Detwang (3 km downriver) puts the Tauber cycle path at the gate; the walk or ride up to town takes 30 minutes, and the town’s markets cover self-catering basics. The Schneeballen keep for days — the town’s best edible souvenir.

HOTELS & STAYS

Where to stay nearby

01

Inside the walls is the only right answer for atmosphere: the lanes empty after the coaches leave, the floodlit walls are steps away, and the small hotels and guesthouses in historic houses (the Eisenhut on the market square, the Tiergarten’s quiet corner houses) carry the town’s character. Prices run high in season — the overnight is what you are paying for.

02

Outside the walls, the Detwang village (3 km down the Tauber) and the suburb hotels trade a short walk or drive for half the price — the right call in high summer when the in-town rooms sell out weeks ahead.

03

For long-stay and family rooms, the Romantic Road’s guesthouses on the Galgengasse side offer apartments inside the walls with kitchenette — practical with children.

04

Camping: Camping Tauber-Idyll (in Detwang, on the Tauber river, open April–October, 52 pitches, rental cabins) is the town’s standard site — riverside, quiet, and 30 minutes on foot or 5 by car up the valley to the walls. The Romantische Straße motorhome stops near the town fill by mid-afternoon in season.
