ABOUT THIS ITINERARY

Würzburg measures out in two clean days: the baroque town below and the vineyard-and-fortress heights above — with the bridge’s ritual opening and closing the visit.

THE SCHEDULE

Day by day

Day 1

The Baroque Town

The Residence’s Tiepolo at opening, the Hofgarten, the Dom’s two Tiepolos (one carved, one painted), the Marienkapelle’s market, and the Alte Mainbrücke at sunset.

  1. Morning

    Würzburg Residence (UNESCO)

    2–2.5 hours

The first guided tour of the day — staircase, Tiepolo fresco, Kaisersaal — then the free Hofgarten.

  2. Midday

    St. Kilian’s Cathedral

    45–60 min

The Schönborn Chapel’s Riemenschneider, Tiepolo’s last canvas, the crypt.

  3. Afternoon

    Marienkapelle and the Marktplatz

    1–1.5 hours

The red Gothic, the master’s grave, and the market’s stalls under the tower — plus the Falkenhaus.

  4. Evening

    Alte Mainbrücke

    Open

The wine stands’ glass on the bridge at sunset — the fortress across the water turning gold.

GETTING AROUND

The whole day runs on foot — under 5 km, flat, everything inside the old town. The station quarter is ten minutes from the Residence.

Day 2

Fortress, Käppele and the Stein

The fortress’s bastions and Riemenschneider museum in the morning, the vineyard terraces to the river, the Käppele’s Stations climb in the afternoon, and the Stein’s circuit — or its kiosk — as the close.

  1. Morning

    Marienberg Fortress

    2–2.5 hours

The bastion circuit’s panorama, the Mainfränkisches Museum’s Riemenschneider hall, the Marienkirche.

  2. Midday

    Vineyard terraces and lunch

    1–1.5 hours

The terraces down to the Main and a Franconian table in the old town — or the fortress café.

  3. Afternoon

    Käppele Pilgrimage Church

    1.5 hours

The fourteen Stations pavilions’ climb to Neumann’s chapel and the river panorama.

  4. Late afternoon

    The Würzburger Stein

    2 hours

The signposted vineyard circuit — Germany’s largest single site — and the kiosk’s Sylvaner at the top.

GETTING AROUND

On foot for the fortress and the Käppele (bridge-linked, under 7 km with climbs); the Stein is reachable on foot from the fortress (25 minutes) or by bus to the Röntgen school stop. The day’s climbs are paved throughout.

FOOD & DRINK

Where to eat nearby

01

Würzburg eats and drinks Franconian wine culture: the Sylvaner and Müller-Thurgau of the Würzburger Stein poured from the Bocksbeutel bottle, the schäufele roast with the crispy crackling, and the student city’s broad cheap table — bratwurst, flammkuchen and the Weinstuben’s boards.

02

The Alte Mainbrücke’s wine stands are the town’s ritual: a glass of local wine in the open air by the river (strictly the old rule — walk and drink on the bridge), with the fortress across the water. The Bürgerspital and the Juliusspital — the two great wine foundations — run cellar restaurants under the town, their wines the Stein’s own.

03

Around the market and the Dom, the Weinstuben and Franconian kitchens carry the classic table: the Weinstuben of the Juliusspital and the Bürgerspital, the Ratskeller under the town hall, and the market’s fruit-and-flower stalls for the walking breakfast. The student quarters south of the river run the cheap-and-good range.

04

Camping travellers: the Main Camp Resort’s riverside pitches sit on the Main’s southern bank 15 minutes’ walk from the bridge; the Kanu-Club’s simple site is the budget riverside option in season. The town’s markets cover self-catering; the Bocksbeutel makes the best picnic on the fortress walls.

HOTELS & STAYS

Where to stay nearby

01

The old town between the Residence and the bridge is the right base: everything of the first-day circuit walks, hotels in rebuilt burgher houses around the Dom and the market, and the bridge’s evening ritual at the door. Book ahead for the festival weekends.

02

The Julianenviertel (by the Juliusspital) and the Sanderhei quarter south of the Residence trade five quiet minutes for lower rates — the student-heavy streets carry cafés and small hotels.

03

For wine-country atmosphere, the vineyard villages across the Main (Höchberg, Veitshöchheim with its rococo garden) offer guesthouses a short S-Bahn or boat hop out — the calmer beds in festival season.

04

Camping: the Main Camp Resort Würzburg (riverside, south bank, year-round, modern facilities) is the city’s standard site — 15 minutes’ walk to the old town along the Main. The Kanu-Club Würzburg’s simple riverside camping runs in season (April–October, modest, atmospheric). Book the Resort for festival weekends.
