ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The Aosta Valley is a castle corridor: one hundred-something towers and keeps strung along the Dora Baltea. Fénis is the fairy-tale — a 14th-century residence with crenellated walls and a painted courtyard of saints and sages, built for show rather than defence. Issogne across the valley answers with its frescoed portico and the famous pomegranate fountain. And guarding the narrowest gorge of the valley, the Fort of Bard — rebuilt in 1830 after Napoleon itself bombarded the earlier castle — now runs a cable car to ramparts housing the Museum of the Alps and the chilling Prisons.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You drive or bus the SS26 valley road and hop between three centuries of mountain power: the walk through Fénis’s courtyard frescoes, Issogne’s cour d’honneur, and Bard’s cable-car ride to ramparts where the whole valley’s geography explains itself. Bard also hosts temporary exhibitions that are among the best in the region.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The castle corridor is the Aosta Valley’s medieval answer to its Roman layer — the valley as a corridor of power for two thousand years.
