ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Courmayeur sits in a wide basin at 1,224 m on the Italian side of Mont Blanc, and has been doing this longer than anywhere else in Italy: spas here drew visitors in the 18th century, the first mountain guides’ society in the Alps formed here in 1850, and the town has been a byword for alpine hospitality ever since. Via Roma, its stone-paved pedestrian spine, runs from the 12th-century bell tower of Saints Pantaleone and Valentino toward boutiques and historic cafés — all under a wall of rock and ice that never lets you forget where you are. Two valleys, the green pastures of Val Ferret and the glacier-banked Val Veny, begin at the edge of town; the Tour du Mont Blanc passes through both. And from the hamlet of Entrèves the Skyway Monte Bianco — rotating cabins, a glass terrace, a botanical garden at 2,173 m — climbs to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 m, the closest a cable car gets to the top of Europe.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

The Salassi worked these pastures before Rome; the village of Curtis Mayoris grew around its church in the 12th century, and its bell tower still marks the centre. The 17th century brought plague, invasion and the sanctuary of Notre Dame de Guérison; the 18th brought the doctors and their patients, who came for the thermal springs at neighbouring Pré-Saint-Didier. In 1850 ten Courmayeur men founded the first society of alpine guides in the Alps, and the town’s fate was sealed: by the 20th century the Casa delle Guide trained the climbers who wrote the massif’s first ascents, the Duke of the Abruzzi opened its museum in 1929, the 1947 Grand Hotel Royal set the tone of elegance, and the tunnel of 1965 tied Italy to France under the mountain. Courmayeur remains what it has been for two centuries — the Italian drawing room of Mont Blanc.

NATURE & WILDLIFE

The Living Landscape

The basin sits at 1,224 m under a wall that climbs to 4,810 m — every alpine life zone in one glance. Chamois and ibex hold the rock faces; bearded vultures and golden eagles ride the thermals over the Jorasses; marmots whistle from the Val Ferret meadows and the walls of the valleys run with ptarmigan and black grouse higher up. The larch forests blaze copper through October; the Saussurea garden at 2,173 m grows the rare endemics of the high scree.
