ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Sistiana is the soft side of this coast: a perfect crescent bay under the karst wall, with a shingle-and-sand beach, a palm-lined promenade of bars and gelaterie, and water that is deep, clear and calm inside the headland. Next door, PortoPiccolo — once the fishermen’s cove of the Sistiana village, now rebuilt as a pastel village-marina — stacks its houses around a harbour of small boats with swimming platforms on the rocks and a beach club below. The two together make the best swimming and sunset aperitivo combination between Trieste and Monfalcone.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Sistiana bay was the landing place of the Roman coast road and the Habsburg seaside train stop; its beach has drawn Trieste families since the 19th century. PortoPiccolo was the tiny fishing hamlet “il Borgo di Porto Piccolo”, rebuilt in the 2010s into a marina village that kept the original cove’s geometry — one of the most photographed corners of the Gulf.

Why it matters
This is where the cliff coast puts down its guard — the swim, the gelato and the sunset that make the hike worth the effort, ten minutes from the trailheads.
