ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Two kilometres inland from the castle, the Timavo does what no ordinary river does: it surfaces fully formed. The river that sinks into the Škocjan caves in Slovenia travels tens of kilometres underground and erupts here at the edge of the coast in four powerful springs beside the little church of San Giovanni — a place Roman writers already found mysterious, and hydrologists traced with dyes only in the 20th century. A quiet path follows the river’s last 2 km to its mouth past fishermen’s huts and the ruins of an early-Christian basilica.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The Timavo was sacred to the Romans — altars to its nymphs stand in the museum at Trieste — and its underground course made it the founding enigma of karst hydrology: the dye-tracing experiments that proved the connection to the Škocjan caves were among the first in the science. The springs powered mills, supplied Venetian warships, and their bora-cold air still refrigerates the surrounding vineyards in summer.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters
