ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of the few resorts where a skier can ride a glacier at 2,700 metres and a World Cup downhill in the same week: the Zugspitze area trades convenience for snow-security and high-mountain light, while the Classic area under the Alpspitze carries the better, steeper skiing — including the Kandahar, the valley’s race-history slope.

FOOD & DRINK
Where to eat nearby
Garmisch-Partenkirchen eats Bavarian alpine: Weißwurst and pretzels to start the day, Obatzda and Brettljause boards, pork roasts with knödel, and the trout that the region’s rivers and the Eibsee hatcheries supply — with the Austrian border’s influence showing in Tiroler Gröstl and Kaiserschmarrn on most cards.
The pedestrian cores of both towns hold the classic range: historic inns on Partenkirchen’s Ludwigstrasse with painted parlours, Garmisch’s brewery restaurants and hotel dining rooms, and the ski-lodge grills at the mid-stations of every cable car. After a mountain day, the valley station villages (Eibsee hotel terrace, Hausberg base houses) are the honest places to eat.
Mountain restaurants deserve planning as destinations: the Alpspitzbahn’s top station terrace hangs over the Höllentalklamm view; the Wankhaus sits alone on its summit meadow; the Eibsee lakeside pavilions do the full Bavarian menu with the massif across the water. On the Zugspitze summit, the Panorama restaurant — Germany’s highest — serves lunch at 2,600 metres with a 400-peak view in clear weather.
Beer-garden season runs through summer on both town centres; ski-hut culture (Glühwein, Kaiserschmarrn at 2,000 metres) carries the winter. Self-catering is well served — the weekly market and supermarkets sit between the two centres, and the campsite villages of Krün and Grainau add smaller local options.
HOTELS & STAYS
Where to stay nearby
Partenkirchen’s Ludwigstrasse quarter is the character choice: painted facades, family-run guesthouses within walking distance of the Zugspitzbahnhof, and the quieter evening. Garmisch’s centre around Bahnhofstrasse carries the bigger hotels, the shopping street and the livelier après scene.
Grainau, one station and two kilometres below the Eibsee cable car, is the calm alpine-village option with views up to the Zugspitze massif from the garden chairs; the Eibsee hotel itself sits right at the lake for the full postcard stay at postcard prices.
Camping: the Alpen-Caravanpark Tennsee at Krün (between Garmisch and Mittenwald, at a small swimming lake, open year-round) is the region’s most praised site; the Camping Resort Zugspitze in Grainau lies directly under the massif with the cable car in view; and Camp am Wank runs at the Wankbahn base on the valley’s eastern side. All three put the Zugspitzbahn and ski buses within minutes.
Ski-in practicality: winter visitors should weigh proximity to the Zugspitzbahnhof and the ski-bus loop (every bed in the valley is on it) over absolute centrality; summer hikers profit from the Wankbahn and Alpspitzbahn ends of town. Book months ahead for February half-term and the Christmas–New Year block.
