ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Church of the Holy Cross stands on a hilltop above the village of Kojsko, on the eastern ridge of Goriška Brda, and combines religious heritage with one of the finest panoramic positions in the region. The church has late-medieval and Gothic origins, and its interior holds a historic winged altar, while the path up to it is marked by the Stations of the Cross that make the approach itself a pilgrimage. The image shown here is a regional panorama rather than a view of the church interior. From the churchyard the landscape opens out over the vineyards, villages and ridges of Brda, and the site shows how closely religious heritage and panoramic landscape are bound together in the region — the best viewpoints are so often the church towers on the hilltops.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The Church of the Holy Cross above Kojsko has late-medieval and Gothic origins, built as a hilltop pilgrimage church on a ridge that was already a place of devotion. Its winged altar is a surviving piece of the late-medieval furnishing of the church, and the Stations of the Cross lining the approach record the pilgrimage tradition that brought worshippers up the hill for centuries. Like the other churches of Brda, it stood through the border changes and the division of the region in the twentieth century, and it remains an active place of worship as well as a monument. The building has been maintained and restored across its history, and its present form records the layers of its late-medieval origin and later devotional use.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The Church of the Holy Cross is the place where the religious heritage and the panoramic landscape of Goriška Brda meet most clearly. Its hilltop position, its Gothic fabric and its winged altar tie it to the devotional history of the region, while its view ties it to the vineyard landscape below, and for a visitor it is the one site that shows how the church towers on the Brda hilltops are both spiritual landmarks and the region’s finest viewpoints.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The church stands on a hilltop above Kojsko, reached by a walk uphill from the village. Check current interior access directly, as the church is an active place of worship and opening is limited.
Surface
The approach is uphill and exposed to weather; wear grippy shoes and bring water and sun protection for the climb.
Best Time
A clear morning or late afternoon, when the panorama is at its best and the walk up is cooler; avoid thunderstorms on the exposed hilltop.
Context
The church is a short detour from the central ridge circuit and pairs well with Šmartno, Gonjače and Kojsko village.

FOOD & DRINK

Where to eat nearby

01

Brda’s table follows its hills: cured meats such as pršut, local cheeses, olive oil pressed from the groves on the lower slopes, seasonal fruit — cherries in late spring, peaches and apricots in summer, chestnuts in autumn — and rustic regional cooking built around what is ripe that week. Look for simple village inns and farmhouse kitchens serving home-grown produce rather than formal restaurants.

02

Wine is the centre of the meal. Rebula is the characteristic regional white grape, joined by Friulano, Malvasia, Pinot varieties and a growing range of orange and skin-contact wines made in the traditional way; reds include Merlot, Cabernet and Refosco. Tastings depend on individual producers and often require advance arrangements, and walk-in availability is never guaranteed — contact cellars ahead rather than assuming a tasting room will be open.

03

Anyone drinking alcohol must not drive. Plan a designated driver, arrange transport, or stay overnight in the region so that tasting can be enjoyed safely. Do not rely on being able to “just have one” and then drive the winding ridge roads.

HOTELS & STAYS

Where to stay nearby

01

Farm stays and guesthouses in the villages around Šmartno and the central ridge put you within walking distance of cellars and viewpoints, and are the most practical option if you want to taste wine in the evening without driving afterwards.

02

Small hotels and agriturismo-style accommodation around Dobrovo and the western villages offer a slightly larger base with easier access to the castle, museum and the main road from Nova Gorica.

03

Self-catering houses in the dispersed hamlets suit longer, quieter stays and let you shop at local farm gates and markets, but a car is essential for reaching them and for getting around once there.
