ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

The Vipava Valley Wine Train turns the journey itself into the destination. A vintage green train leaves Nova Gorica on selected dates, and the five hours that follow are a moving tasting room: a glass of local sparkling wine at boarding, five Vipava Valley wines poured on board while a local winemaker explains what makes this narrow valley — squeezed between the karst plateau and the Trnovo forest — one of Slovenia’s most distinctive wine regions. The train stops at Ajdovščina for a guided half-hour walk through the town (about 1.2 km), then continues to Dornberk, where a local wine farm serves a long table of traditional food — pršut baked in bread dough, jota with sausage — with another five or six wines poured alongside. The train returns to Nova Gorica by early evening. It is a single, organised, seasonal excursion rather than a scheduled service: dates are limited and places sell out, so check the current timetable and book ahead.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

Board a vintage heritage train at Nova Gorica station and start the trip with a glass of local sparkling wine. Taste five Vipava Valley wines on board while a local winemaker talks through the valley’s grapes and winegrowing. Step off at Ajdovščina for a guided walk of roughly half an hour through the town, then ride on to Dornberk, where a wine farm lays on a traditional meal — pršut baked in dough, jota with sausage — and pours another five or six wines. Ride back to Nova Gorica, arriving around 19:05. The whole experience runs about five hours and includes a Vipava Valley wine glass to take home.

THE EXPERIENCE IN DETAIL

What it’s really like

This is a fixed, organised seasonal excursion: one operator, one route, one afternoon. The published format is a 14:05 departure from Nova Gorica station (meet around 13:20), a stop in Ajdovščina, a wine-farm visit at Dornberk and a return around 19:05, priced at about €79 per person including train travel, the guided walk, all tastings, food and a souvenir glass. Children are welcome: under-3s ride free, ages 4–7 pay a reduced fare. Dates run on selected days only and availability changes — confirm the current timetable, dates and prices with the organiser before planning travel around it. Anyone drinking must not drive afterward; the train returns you to Nova Gorica, which removes the need for a designated driver on the tasting day itself.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The wine train compresses everything that makes the Vipava Valley and the neighbouring Brda hills distinctive — small-scale winemaking, farm cooking, village-scale towns — into one afternoon that needs no car, no planning and no language. For travellers based in Nova Gorica or Gorizia, it is the single easiest way to taste western Slovenia’s wine country without driving the narrow valley roads.

FOOD & DRINK

Where to eat nearby

01

Brda’s table follows its hills: cured meats such as pršut, local cheeses, olive oil pressed from the groves on the lower slopes, seasonal fruit — cherries in late spring, peaches and apricots in summer, chestnuts in autumn — and rustic regional cooking built around what is ripe that week. Look for simple village inns and farmhouse kitchens serving home-grown produce rather than formal restaurants.

02

Wine is the centre of the meal. Rebula is the characteristic regional white grape, joined by Friulano, Malvasia, Pinot varieties and a growing range of orange and skin-contact wines made in the traditional way; reds include Merlot, Cabernet and Refosco. Tastings depend on individual producers and often require advance arrangements, and walk-in availability is never guaranteed — contact cellars ahead rather than assuming a tasting room will be open.

03

Anyone drinking alcohol must not drive. Plan a designated driver, arrange transport, or stay overnight in the region so that tasting can be enjoyed safely. Do not rely on being able to “just have one” and then drive the winding ridge roads.

HOTELS & STAYS

Where to stay nearby

01

Farm stays and guesthouses in the villages around Šmartno and the central ridge put you within walking distance of cellars and viewpoints, and are the most practical option if you want to taste wine in the evening without driving afterwards.

02

Small hotels and agriturismo-style accommodation around Dobrovo and the western villages offer a slightly larger base with easier access to the castle, museum and the main road from Nova Gorica.

03

Self-catering houses in the dispersed hamlets suit longer, quieter stays and let you shop at local farm gates and markets, but a car is essential for reaching them and for getting around once there.
