Postojna Cave Railway and Underground Walk
Combine the unique underground electric railway with the guided walking section through Postojna Cave’s illuminated limestone galleries.

Nature & Hiking
The gateway to Slovenia’s Classical Karst — a cave town above an underground railway, a cliff-cave castle and the limestone landscape that gave karst its name.
Postojna is the principal gateway to Slovenia’s Classical Karst — the limestone plateau whose name became the scientific word for karst landscapes worldwide. The town itself is a small regional centre on the edge of the karst, but its identity is carried around the world by the Postojna Cave: one of the largest and most-visited show caves in Europe, toured partly by a unique underground electric railway. A short distance away, Predjama Castle rises sheer from the mouth of a cliff cave, and the surrounding karst is scored by dolines, sinking rivers, dry valleys and underground passages. Together they make Postojna the natural starting point for understanding the karst — its geology, its human history and its living cave fauna, including the olm (Proteus anguinus), the pale amphibian that lives in the dark cave waters.
MAP & LOCATION
HISTORY & CULTURE
The Postojna area has been known for its caves since early modern times, but the cave’s modern history began in 1818, when the inner passages were explored and the olm was first described to science. Visitors soon followed — among them the Habsburg emperor Ferdinand I in 1819 — and Postojna became one of the earliest tourist caves in Europe. The underground railway, installed in 1872 and electrified in 1957, still carries visitors through the illuminated galleries. Predjama Castle, set in a cliff cave a few kilometres away, has a longer and more turbulent story: a medieval stronghold refashioned into a Renaissance residence, famously associated with the knight Erasmus of Lueg, whose siege in the 15th century became part of local legend. Across the centuries the karst landscape itself — its sinkholes, underground rivers and stone — shaped settlement, farming and water use, and gave the region its name.
TOP THINGS TO DO
TOP ATTRACTIONS
FOOD & DRINK
Postojna town has everyday cafés, bakeries and simple restaurants around the centre and near the cave entrance — practical for a quick meal before or after a cave tour.
The wider karst region is known for its rustic fare — air-cured pršut (karst prosciutto), local cheeses, hearty soups and teran wine — best sought at rural inns and farmsteads in the surrounding villages rather than at the busiest tourist spots.
For a slower meal, plan lunch in one of the karst villages between Postojna and the coast, where small family-run gostilnas often serve seasonal, locally sourced dishes; confirm opening days directly, as many keep limited hours.
HOTELS & STAYS
Postojna town itself offers a range of guesthouses and small hotels within easy walking distance of the cave entrance — the most convenient base if you want to start a cave tour early and avoid transport pressure.
The surrounding karst villages have rural guesthouses and farm stays set among stone houses, meadows and vineyards — a quieter, more atmospheric option for visitors with a car who want to experience the karst landscape beyond the cave.
Visitors combining Postojna with the coast can also base themselves in nearby coastal towns such as Koper or Piran and travel inland for the day, though this adds travel time and makes an early cave visit harder to plan.
ITINERARIES
PLAN YOUR VISIT
Postojna is on the main road and rail corridor between Ljubljana and the Slovenian coast, with regular trains and buses serving the town; the cave entrance is a short walk from the town centre. By car it is roughly an hour from Ljubljana and under an hour from the coast. Confirm current timetables directly rather than relying on fixed schedules.
Postojna town, the cave entrance and the town centre are easily covered on foot. Predjama Castle stands outside the town centre and is not within comfortable walking distance — arrange separate transport (a seasonal shuttle, local bus, taxi or private vehicle) to reach it, and check current connections before relying on them.
The cave is visitable year-round thanks to its constant underground temperature, but the surrounding karst is most pleasant to explore in spring and autumn. Summer brings the heaviest visitor pressure; winter days are short and some surface facilities may reduce hours, so check current opening information directly.
Bring a warm layer for the cave — the underground temperature stays cool in every season, so even on a hot summer day a jacket or fleece is needed. Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear with a good grip for the cave paths, which can be damp and uneven, and for the karst terrain and Predjama Castle approach. A small day bag with water is useful for the surface walks.
The cave tour involves the underground railway, stairs and uneven passages, and Predjama Castle is built into a cliff with steep, narrow access — both have limited accessibility for visitors with reduced mobility. Check current accessibility information directly with the cave and castle before visiting, as conditions and available assistance can change.
