ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Walking the čaršija is the way to read Maglaj at the pace it was built. The old quarter spreads beneath the fortress on the slope down to the Bosna, a compact district of narrow streets and stone houses gathered around the Kuršumlija Mosque and the clock tower, with Uzeirbegov konak on the riverbank and the restored Delibegov han on the left bank. The walk is short and largely level, and it ties the fortress above to the river below in a single loop, taking in the principal heritage buildings of the town — the mosque, the clock tower, the konak and the hans — as one continuous streetscape rather than a list of separate sights.

HIGHLIGHTS

Moments worth savouring

01

The Kuršumlija Mosque — the sixteenth-century Ottoman mosque, the sacral centrepiece of the čaršija.

02

The sahat-kula — the 1697 clock tower in the fortress forecourt, the timekeeping landmark of the old town.

03

Uzeirbegov konak — the old-Bosnian residence on the riverbank, the finest secular building of the quarter.

04

The stone houses and lanes — the ordinary Ottoman fabric of the čaršija, the streets that hold the old town together.

05

Delibegov han — the restored nineteenth-century inn on the left bank, a record of the valley caravan traffic.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

The čaršija walk is self-directed and on foot, beginning from the town centre or the riverside and climbing gently toward the fortress. The district is compact and largely level, easily walked in an unhurried hour or two. The Kuršumlija Mosque is a working place of worship; visitors are welcome outside prayer times, and modest dress is expected — shoulders and knees covered, with scarves usually provided. No opening hours or fees are stated here; check locally for any current visiting arrangements for the konak and the han.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The čaršija walk is the experience that holds Maglaj together — the connective loop between the fortress and the river, and the way the town’s Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian past is walked through rather than only seen. For a visitor it is the natural middle of a Maglaj day.
