ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Motovun’s walls wrap the whole crown of the hill in a single walkable circuit — a rarity, since most Istrian hill towns lost their rings to time. The walk takes twenty minutes, passes three gate layers at the base, and delivers an unbroken 360-degree panorama: the Mirna river winding to the sea, the neighbors Oprtalj and Grožnjan on their own hills, vineyards and the truffle oak woods filling everything between.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The first ring dates from the 13th century, when Motovun was a fortified commune; the Venetians, who ruled from 1420 until the republic’s fall, raised and repaired the circuit through the 16th and 17th centuries as the Ottoman frontier loomed to the east. Three successive gates — the outer, middle and inner — climb the same lane, a built diagram of medieval defence. The walls survived because Motovun never outgrew its hilltop.
