Walk the Walls at Sunset
The wall circuit in the last hour of light, when the Mirna valley turns gold and the day-trippers are gone.

History & Heritage
A medieval hilltop village above the truffle forests of the Mirna valley.
Motovun is the archetypal Istrian hilltop village: a medieval walled town crowned on a steep cone 280 metres above the Mirna river valley, ringed by the oak forests where the world-famous Istrian truffle grows. The walls, the square and the bell tower are the postcard; the forests below, the Parenzana cycling trail and the film festival each summer are the reasons to stay longer than lunch.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Motovun grew as a medieval hill-fort under Venetian rule, and its walls and street plan date largely from the 13th–15th centuries. The surrounding forests have long been hunted for white truffles, and the village is now the symbolic capital of inland Istria’s food and wine country.

ITINERARIES
NATURE & WILDLIFE
The Motovun forest below the town is the historical heart of the Istrian truffle trade — damp oak and hazel woods along the Mirna where licensed hunters and their dogs dig the white truffle each autumn. The valley woods hold deer, wild boar and a rich bird life; the vineyards and olive groves on the hillsides are worked the same way they have been for centuries. Bee-eaters and hoopoes work the summer meadows, and the views from the walls take in the whole Mirna basin to the Adriatic.
PLAN YOUR VISIT
Motovun sits about 25 minutes inland from Poreč and 45 from Pula by road. Parking is at the base of the hill — the top lane is residents-only — and the climb to the gates is a 10–15 minute stepped walk.
The village is entirely on foot; the two hills (Motovun and Grožnjan) need a car or bike between them. The Parenzana trail is gravel and best on a trekking or e-bike, rented locally.
Half a day covers the village and its walls; a full day adds the Parenzana loop and Grožnjan.
Spring and autumn for truffle season and clear valley views; late July for the film festival. The white truffle season peaks October–January.
Comfortable shoes for the stepped lanes, a light layer for valley mornings, and an appetite — the truffle menus are the point.
