ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Motovun’s true wealth was never on the hilltop but in the damp oak woods below it: the Motovun forest along the Mirna is the historical heart of the white Istrian truffle trade, and the tuber magnatum dug here has ranked with Alba’s since the Austro-Hungarian era. Every restaurant in town builds its menu around the truffles hunted by a handful of licensed local families and their dogs — and between late September and January, the forests themselves are the region’s quietest attraction.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Truffle hunting in the Mirna valley is documented for centuries, but the trade became famous in 1929–34, when a single giant white truffle dug near Motovun was exhibited in Vienna and made the forest’s reputation across the empire. Hunting is regulated to this day: licensed hunters, registered dogs, strict seasons — the white truffle from late autumn, the black from summer.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Motovun is one of the few places where a world-class delicacy is a local, family-scale affair — the truffle economy here is villages and dogs, not brands.
