ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

When the Habsburgs organized the Danube Military Frontier, Sombor became one of its principal garrisons; the barracks complex (18th century, repeatedly enlarged) is among the largest Baroque military buildings in the region — today part municipal, part university, and always the town’s biggest silhouette.

The ergele stud and the horse tradition

The state stud farm (founded 1779) — Lipizzaner and Nonius bloodlines, a carriage-driving school that still trains champion teams, and the harness-racing world that makes Sombor Serbia’s horse capital. The Jokić family races here under the Konjički klub “Vojvođanin” banner.

Nikola Jokić’s Sombor — the making of a legend

Sombor is the home town of Nikola Jokić — three-time NBA MVP, 2023 NBA champion and Finals MVP, the 41st-round-afterthought pick who became one of the greatest passers the game has seen. The courts where he learned, the school with his four-storey mural and the kafanas that stay open for Finals tip-offs past midnight make the town an unlikely basketball pilgrimage.

The Jokić Mural & Court at Dositej Obradović

On the wall of Jokić’s old elementary school looms the town’s most-photographed sight: a four-storey mural of the local boy in Denver blue, dribbling, with his motto above his right shoulder — “Don’t be afraid to fail big”. In front of it is the court where he first trained, which he later paid to rebuild with a synthetic surface and pro-style hoops.

The Sombor Hippodrome — three centuries of horse racing

Sombor has been a town of horses since the early 1700s — with a riding school recorded in 1826, a hippodrome as early as 1864, and the track still hosting the biggest harness-racing dates in Serbia. Since 2020 the hippodrome has been renovated under the lease of Nikola Jokić, and on the first week of August the whole town comes out for race day.

Living Tradition

The Fijaker — Sombor’s horse-drawn heritage

The fijaker — the horse-drawn cab — is Sombor’s unofficial emblem. In its golden age the town licensed thirty of them as public transport; a beloved ballad made them immortal; and today one last fijaker still waits by the City Museum for a slow loop of the green streets. The originals stand in the City Museum, polished and street-ready after 100 years.
