Morning at the ergele stud
The morning training of the carriage-driving teams at Serbia’s oldest stud — Lipizzaners on the sand track, the smell of hay and two centuries of horse craft.

Towns & Heritage
Serbia’s town of horses — Baroque squares under plane trees, the fijaker cab, the 1779 stud farm — and the birthplace of Nikola Jokić.
Sombor is Vojvodina’s greenest Baroque town — linden-shaded squares, the grand old Town Hall, the vast barracks of the former Military Frontier and a horse-breeding tradition centuries deep. It is, above all, the home town of Nikola Jokić — the Denver Nuggets centre, NBA champion of 2023, NBA Finals MVP and multiple NBA Most Valuable Player, and by common consent one of the best basketball players of all time — who learned the game on the courts of Sombor and still returns each summer. Between the basketball murals and the famous ergele (state stud) horse farm, the town keeps a slow, distinctly Pannonian rhythm. Horses are the deeper story: the fijaker horse-cab is the town’s emblem, the hippodrome has raced since the 1860s — now renovated under Nikola Jokić’s lease — and the whole green spread of the town sits under giant plane trees (bođoši) brought from the Mississippi valley in 1903. South of town, the Gornje Podunavlje wetlands — part of the UNESCO Bačko Podunavlje Biosphere Reserve — add a European-scale nature reserve to a town that already punches far above its weight.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Sombor grew around an 11th-century fortress mentioned in the earliest Hungarian charters; the Ottoman centuries ended in 1687, and the Habsburgs made it the seat of the Military Frontier’s Bodrog county — the vast 18th-century barracks (today the town’s landmark complex) housed the frontier cavalry. The Town Hall (1748–1808) and the baroque churches rose in the same era; the state stud (ergele), founded in 1779, made Sombor synonymous with horses — a riding school is recorded in 1826, the town poured sand for a civilian “Reitschule” in 1853, the first hippodrome stood by 1864, a second grand track followed in 1927, and the third (1963, on the Stapar road) still races today, renovated since 2020 under the lease of the town’s most famous son. In the interwar years the town’s “Riders’ Day” opened with a procession of horsemen through the streets — the fijaker, the town’s licensed horse cab (thirty of them at the golden-age stand by the City Museum), became the emblem of it all. In 1998 the town’s greatest modern export was born: Nikola Jokić, drafted 41st in 2014, whose MVP seasons (2021, 2022), 2023 NBA championship and Finals MVP with Denver made him the most decorated Serbian basketball player in history and the pride of these courts.
