ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Daorson is the fortified Hellenistic-era centre associated with the Illyrian Daorsi, the people who held this part of the Herzegovinian karst in the late prehistoric and Hellenistic period. It stands near the village of Ošanići above Stolac, and its most striking feature is its megalithic stone walls — great dressed blocks fitted together without mortar, in the manner of the cyclopean masonry of the Hellenistic world. Daorson is the clearest surviving expression of the prehistoric and Illyrian/Hellenistic layer of the Stolac area, the oldest of the layers that the region preserves, and it is reached by a short drive and a walk from the town. The site is an archaeological ruin rather than a developed visitor attraction, so check current access locally before a dedicated trip.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Daorson was the fortified centre of the Illyrian Daorsi, a people who inhabited the area around present-day Stolac in the late prehistoric and Hellenistic period, and who maintained contacts with the Greek world to the south. The site is known for its megalithic stone walls — large dressed blocks fitted without mortar — and for the remains of its acropolis and defensive circuit. It belongs to the prehistoric and Illyrian/Hellenistic layer of the Stolac area, the oldest of the layers the region preserves, alongside the Roman, medieval, Ottoman and later periods. The site is an archaeological ruin; its exact age and its connections to other ancient cultures should not be stated beyond what the archaeological record supports.

The setting above Stolac — the position of the site on the heights near Ošanići.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Daorson is the clearest surviving expression of the prehistoric and Illyrian/Hellenistic layer of the Stolac area, the oldest layer the region preserves. For a visitor it is the optional archaeological extension of a Stolac visit, the sight that reaches back behind the medieval and Ottoman town to the earlier cultures of the karst.
