ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

The climb to Vidoški Castle is the upper layer of a Stolac visit, and the one that demands the most effort. The route climbs from the old town to the medieval fortress on the hilltop, one of the largest fortified complexes in Herzegovina, whose walls and towers look out over the Bregava valley and the old town below. The ascent is short but steep and uneven, with loose stone and little shade, and the ruins at the top are open-air and unmaintained in places. The reward is the panorama over the old town, the Bregava and the surrounding karst, and the place from which the layered history of Stolac is read from above. Take it slowly, wear sturdy shoes, and keep it for the cooler hours.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

A short but steep, uneven climb on loose stone with little shade. The ruins at the top are open-air and unmaintained in places, so watch your footing among the walls. Carry water in warm weather, and keep the climb to the morning or the late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. The view from the summit is the reward and the way to read the whole town from above.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The climb is the way to read Stolac as a layered site — the fortress above and the old town below — and the panorama from the ruins is the one sight that takes in the whole ensemble. For a visitor it is the demanding counterpart to the gentle town walk and the riverside rest.
