ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Trebinje is a town built for walking. The centre is small, flat and compact, and its best features — the fortress walls of Kastel, the plane trees of the main square, the cafés along the river, and the graceful Arslanagić Bridge downstream — are all within a few minutes of one another. A slow walk through the old core and along the Trebišnjica is the natural way to see the town, and it is the one experience that needs no planning, no booking and no guide. You wander the lanes inside the fortress walls, sit for a coffee under the giant plane trees, follow the promenade beside the clear river, and end at the stone bridge where the town’s Ottoman past is at its most elegant. In a few unhurried hours you have seen Trebinje at its own pace.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

You start in the centre, where the walls of Kastel enclose the oldest part of town. Step through the gates and wander the quiet lanes inside the ramparts — stone houses, gardens, washing lines, and the sense of a lived-in quarter rather than a museum. Come back out to Freedom Square (Trg slobode, once known as Oslobodenje), shaded by a line of enormous plane trees that are among the most loved features of the town, and sit for a coffee at one of the café terraces beneath them. From the square it is a short walk to the Trebišnjica and the riverside promenade that follows it; the water is clear and slow, controlled by the upstream dam, and the banks are green and shaded. Following the promenade downstream brings you, in a short walk, to the Arslanagić Bridge — the humpbacked Ottoman stone bridge moved here to save it from a reservoir. Cross it, look back at the arch, and walk the green bank beside it before returning the way you came. The whole loop is easy, flat and unhurried.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

The walk is entirely in the centre of Trebinje and is flat, paved and easy — no more than a couple of kilometres in total, with café terraces at every stage. The lanes inside Kastel are uneven stone, so wear flat, grippy shoes. The main square and the river promenade are busy and lively through the day, especially in the late morning and late afternoon when the café terraces fill; the lanes inside the fortress walls are quiet at almost any time. The Arslanagić Bridge is a public crossing; confirm current access before a dedicated visit, and note that its stone is worn and slippery when wet. The walk can be done year-round, but it is at its best from spring to autumn, when the plane trees are in leaf and the river banks are green. Allow a relaxed morning or afternoon; there is no need to hurry, and the point is to keep the town’s pace.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Most of what is worth seeing in Trebinje is within a short walk of the centre, and the town’s character is best read on foot — the layers of fortress, square, river and bridge that make up its compact core. A walk that links them is the one experience that every visitor can share, regardless of how much time they have, and it is the best introduction to a town whose great virtue is that it does not need to be rushed. For a traveller, the old-town-and-river loop is the way to understand why Trebinje feels as calm as it does.
