ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Grand Canal of Trieste is an 18th-century navigable canal cut deep into the Borgo Teresiano, the planned new town of Empress Maria Theresa — sailboats once moored right in the heart of the city, unloading into the warehouses. Today the waterway ends at the neoclassical church of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo, backed by the church of San Antonio and lined with cafés, wine bars and the Communist Party headquarters painted red on the canal edge. The quarter around it — the old Città Vecchia climbing the San Giusto slope — is the medieval Trieste of alleys, stairs, murals and small family shops.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The canal was dug 1754–1756 under Empress Maria Theresa as part of the Borgo Teresiano, the rational new district that made Trieste the free port and trading engine of the Habsburg crown. Sailboats brought salt, oil and wood directly into the city until the canal’s inner end was filled in 1934 to make Piazza Ponterosso. The quarter around it became the commercial and intellectual engine of the port, and its cafés and reading rooms shaped the Central European culture that Trieste still carries.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The canal quarter is where Trieste eats, drinks and argues — the living heart of the city rather than its monuments, and the best place to feel the Central European texture that makes Trieste unlike any other Italian city.
