ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The Opicina tram is the Trieste experience that locals love as much as visitors — a century-old red tram that hauls itself out of the city and up onto the limestone plateau, ending in the karst walking country above the Gulf. You ride it once for the view and once more because it is simply a wonderful way to travel.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You board at Piazza Oberdan in the city and ride a normal-feeling urban tram through the streets as the gradient builds. At the funicular section the tram couples to a cable carriage and is hauled up the steepest gradient, the roofs and the port falling away below the window. Above, the landscape turns to karst — dry stone walls, low pines, limestone — and at Villa Opicina you walk 20 minutes to the Obelisk belvedere for the classic panorama of the whole horseshoe Gulf.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
About 25 minutes each way; buy a standard transit ticket. The line occasionally closes for maintenance — check before you go, and if it is down, bus 42 covers much of the same route.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
No other single activity combines Trieste’s history, engineering and landscape so completely — and the top-of-the-line view is the best single panorama in the region.
