ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The single best way to see Venice is from the water, and the single best time to do it is the hour before sunset. A vaporetto running the length of the Grand Canal from the railway station to St Mark’s passes the whole catalogue of Venetian palace architecture — Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque — in twenty minutes, and as the light drops the marble façades warm and the canal turns the colour of old gold. Stand at the front of the boat, hold the rail, and watch the city unfold the way it was built to be approached.

Moments worth savouring
The full sequence of palace façades — Ca’ d’Oro, Ca’ Foscari, Palazzo Grassi — read from the water as the architects intended.
The Rialto Bridge seen from below as the boat passes under the arch.
The opening out at St Mark’s Basin, where the canal meets the lagoon and the church of San Giorgio Maggiore faces you across the water.
The light on the marble in the last hour before sunset.
