ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Andrićgrad is a modern cultural and tourism complex built beside the confluence of the Rzav and the Drina, a short distance from the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge and the historic core of Višegrad. It was conceived by the filmmaker Emir Kusturica and developed from 2011 onward, largely completed in the mid-2010s, as a project built around the life and work of Ivo Andrić — the writer whose name the complex carries. It is laid out as a small stone town of streets, squares and buildings in a mixed historical style drawing on Byzantine, Ottoman and medieval Serbian architecture, and it houses a theatre, exhibition spaces, shops, cafés and a statue of Andrić himself at its centre. Andrićgrad is not the historic town of Višegrad: it is a contemporary construction, built on land between the rivers, and it stands as a cultural project and a visitor destination rather than as an old quarter. For a visitor it is best understood as a deliberate companion to the bridge and the old town — a modern interpretation of the literary and historical world of Andrić’s Višegrad, set beside the real one. It is the place where the town’s Andrić heritage is most visibly staged, and a useful orientation point for a visit built around the writer and the bridge.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Andrićgrad was initiated in 2011 by the filmmaker Emir Kusturica, with the support of the Republika Srpska authorities, as a cultural project dedicated to Ivo Andrić and the world of his writing. Construction began on the site at the Rzav–Drina confluence, and the complex was developed over the following years, with its main structures largely completed by 2014. The project was designed as a stone-built ensemble in a historical style, intended to evoke the layered Byzantine, Ottoman and medieval heritage of the region rather than to reconstruct any single period, and it was built to house cultural, theatrical and commercial functions around a central square and a statue of Andrić. The complex has been both a visitor attraction and a subject of public discussion, noted for its ambition and debated for its interpretation of the town’s heritage. It stands today as a modern addition to Višegrad’s cultural landscape, distinct from the historic bridge and the old town, and oriented around the literary legacy that the town has chosen to foreground.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The stone streets and squares — the layout of the complex as a small built town, the contemporary interpretation of the region’s historical architecture.

02

The statue of Ivo Andrić — the central monument to the writer around whom the complex is conceived, the focal point of Andrićgrad.

03

The theatre and exhibition spaces — the cultural venues within the complex, the reason Andrićgrad functions as a cultural project rather than only a streetscape.

04

The Rzav–Drina confluence — the setting of the complex at the meeting of the two rivers, the geographical relationship to the old town and the bridge.

05

The contrast with the historic town — Andrićgrad read alongside the real old bridge and streets of Višegrad, the modern project beside the historic one.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Andrićgrad is the place where Višegrad’s Andrić heritage is most visibly gathered and staged. It is a modern cultural complex rather than a historic quarter, and understanding that distinction is the key to reading it honestly: it is a contemporary interpretation of the literary world of Andrić’s Višegrad, set beside the genuine historic town and its UNESCO bridge.
