ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Foča is a small town on the Drina river in the southeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina, set where the Čeotina flows into the Drina and the mountains of the Dinaric Alps close in around the valley. It is best known to travellers as an outdoor-adventure gateway: the upper reaches of the Tara river and its canyon, one of the deepest river gorges in Europe, lie a short distance away, and the town has become the principal base for Tara rafting and for the wider river-and-mountain country of Eastern Bosnia. The rivers are the defining feature — the Drina itself, the Tara, and the clear mountain tributaries that feed them — and around them sits a landscape of forested slopes, limestone peaks and remote valleys that stretches from here toward Sutjeska National Park and the Montenegrin border. Foča also carries an Ottoman heritage in its old centre, most visibly in the Aladža Mosque, a 16th-century monument destroyed in the 1990s war and rebuilt in 2019. For a visitor, Foča is the town you pass through on the way to the canyon and the rivers — the practical base from which the outdoor country of the southeast is reached, and a destination in its own right for anyone drawn to water, mountains and quiet roads.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Foča developed as an Ottoman town on the Drina, its riverside čaršija serving the surrounding mountain country, and its mosques — above all the 16th-century Aladža — making it one of the notable Ottoman towns of Eastern Bosnia. The town’s strategic position on the Drina kept it a crossing and a market through the Ottoman and later periods. In the 1990s war, most of Foča’s Ottoman religious heritage was destroyed, and the town’s recent history is bound up with that loss and with the post-war reconstruction that followed, most visibly in the rebuilding and 2019 reopening of the Aladža Mosque. In the modern period Foča has become known as an outdoor-adventure gateway, the principal base for Tara Canyon rafting and for the river-and-mountain country of the southeast.

Practical Information

Getting There

Foča sits on the Drina in the southeast of Bosnia & Herzegovina, reached by road from Sarajevo via the regional route through Eastern Bosnia, and from the Mostar and Višegrad directions along the valleys of the Neretva and the Drina. Intercity buses link Foča with Sarajevo and the surrounding towns, but a private vehicle, a rented car or an arranged transfer is the practical way to reach the Tara Canyon launch points above the town. There is no rail link to Foča.

What to Wear & Bring

For the town day, comfortable walking shoes and modest clothing for the Aladža Mosque (shoulders and knees covered; scarves are usually provided) are the baseline. For the Tara Canyon rafting day, wear clothing and footwear that can get wet and bring a change of dry clothes, as the operator advises; the operator supplies the raft and safety equipment. Carry some cash (BAM) for the town centre and riverside cafés, and confirm rafting arrangements with a licensed local operator in advance.

Accessibility & Mobility

The old centre of Foča and the Drina riverfront are compact and largely flat, and walkable for most visitors. The Aladža Mosque is reached on foot from the riverfront and requires removing shoes and climbing steps at the entrance. The Tara Canyon rafting day is an adventure activity run on a river through a deep gorge, and is not accessible to visitors with significant mobility concerns; suitability is set by the operator according to the river conditions and the experience of the group.
