ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The Vrbas is the river that made Banja Luka, and the easiest way to understand how dramatic its setting is, is to get onto it. Just outside the city the river cuts a deep limestone canyon through the hills — the Tijesno gorge — where clear green water runs between white cliffs, and the rapids range from easy riffles to serious white water. Rafting the Vrbas is the city’s signature outdoor experience: a few hours on the water with a licensed local crew, passing canyon walls and forested banks that are invisible from the road, and running rapids that have hosted international competitions. You do not need experience for the calmer stretches, and the canyon is close enough to the city to be a half-day trip.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You meet your operator in Banja Luka and drive a short distance upriver to the put-in, where you are issued a helmet, buoyancy aid and paddle and given a safety briefing. The raft holds six to eight people plus a guide who does the steering, and you set off down the canyon. The first stretches are calm enough to take in the scenery — sheer limestone walls, overhanging trees, the green colour of the water — before the rapids begin. The guide calls the strokes; you paddle when told and hold on through the waves. Some rapids are splashy and fun, others are bigger and demand attention. Halfway down there is usually a stop to swim, rest and look up at the canyon from water level. The trip ends at a take-out downstream, and you are driven back to the city. The whole outing is a half-day, and you spend most of it on the water.

Rapids from gentle stretches to grade IV white water, including the competition course that has hosted European and world rafting events.
A half-day trip run by licensed local operators — no experience needed for the calmer sections, with a guide steering the raft.
A swim stop inside the canyon, where you can float in the green water between the cliffs.
The closest white-water experience to a major city in Bosnia & Herzegovina — the put-in is a short drive from central Banja Luka.
A way to see the river that defined the city from the water level, rather than from the bridges above it.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Rafting on the Vrbas is offered by several licensed operators based in and around Banja Luka, typically from spring through autumn, with water levels highest in spring after snowmelt and lower in late summer. Trips can be tailored to experience: calmer family-friendly stretches or the bigger rapids of the gorge for those who want them. You will get wet regardless of the section — dress in quick-drying clothes and bring a change of clothes for after. Operators provide all safety equipment and a guide in each raft; you do not need to be able to swim strongly, but you should be comfortable in water and reasonably fit. Book ahead in the high season, and confirm what a given trip includes — the canyon section, the distance and the rapid grades — before you go. Prices and schedules vary by operator, so check current details locally.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Banja Luka is a city built on the Vrbas, but most visitors see the river only from its bridges and banks. Rafting the canyon is the experience that takes you into the landscape the city belongs to — the gorge that the river cut through the hills on the city’s edge, and the green water that runs through the centre. It is also the outdoor activity Banja Luka is best known for, and the one that most distinguishes a visit here from a visit to the country’s other cities. For a traveller who wants one thing to do beyond the city walk, this is it.
