ABOUT THIS ITINERARY

Three days let the park be read properly: the lake on the first morning, the mountains on the second, the history on the third — with the Ramsau villages and the Jenner as the flexible pieces between.

THE SCHEDULE

Day by day

Day 1

Königssee and the Obersee

The first electric boat across the silent lake, the echo stop, St. Bartholomä and its ice cave, and the Obersee–Fischunkelalm–Röthbachfall walk beyond Salet.

  1. Morning

    Königssee crossing and St. Bartholomä

    3 hours

First boat of the day: the echo-wall trumpet, the church peninsula, the Eiskapelle path — the lake at its mirror before the flotilla.

  2. Midday

    Lunch at St. Bartholomä

    1 hour

The inn’s Reinanke and Bavarian cards on the church jetty terrace — cash.

  3. Afternoon

Boat to Salet and the Obersee

    3–4 hours

The ferry’s second landing, the lakehead walk, the Fischunkelalm and Germany’s highest waterfall above it.

GETTING AROUND

Bus 841 from Berchtesgaden station to the Königssee jetty (20 minutes); the boat is the only way on the water. Return boats run through late afternoon.

Day 2

Watzmann Country and Ramsau

The Jenner’s summit panorama over the lake and east face in the morning; the Hintersee, Zauberwald and Ramsau’s painted church in the afternoon.

  1. Morning

    Jenner panorama

    3 hours

Cable car to the summit terrace: the whole lake, the Watzmann east face, the Steinernes Meer — with the mid-station path as the descent’s slow read.

  2. Afternoon

    Hintersee and Zauberwald

    2–3 hours

The boulder lake, the enchanted forest loop and the Hochkalter mirror — swim if summer allows.

  3. Late afternoon

    Ramsau and St. Sebastian

    1 hour

The painted church on its meadow and the Malerwinkel — the valley’s postcard at the evening light.

GETTING AROUND

Buses 841 (Königssee/Jenner) and 846 (Ramsau/Hintersee) from Berchtesgaden station cover the whole day; the Jennerbahn base and the boat jetty share the same stop.

Day 3

Obersalzberg: Dokumentation and the Eagle’s Nest

The free Dokumentation exhibition and bunker corridors in the morning, the Kehlstein bus road and brass lift to the Eagle’s Nest after lunch, and Berchtesgaden’s old town and salt mine as the closing hours.

  1. Morning

    Dokumentation Obersalzberg

    2–2.5 hours

The exhibition on the Nazi mountain stronghold and the walkable bunker system beneath — free, sober, essential context.

  2. Afternoon

    Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle’s Nest)

    3 hours

The Kehlstein bus up the cliff road, the brass lift through the summit, the terrace panorama and the honest history displays.

  3. Evening

    Berchtesgaden old town

    2 hours

The market square, provost church and a final Bavarian dinner — or the salt mine if the arrival day is still ahead.

GETTING AROUND

Bus 838 runs the station → Obersalzberg/Dokumentation line; the Kehlstein buses depart from the same terminus (private cars cannot drive the summit road). The old town walks from the station quarter.

FOOD & DRINK

Where to eat nearby

01

Berchtesgaden eats the Bavarian alpine canon — Weißwurst mornings, Brettljause boards, pork and knödel, and the region’s own obsession: fresh river trout and the Königssee’s legendary Reinanke (alpine char), served grilled or smoked wherever the lake’s boats land.

02

On the Königssee itself, the choices are the point: the St. Bartholomä inn serves its fish and Bavarian cards at the pilgrimage church’s jetty (cash, seasonal hours), and the Saletalm at the lake’s far end covers the Obersee walkers — eating here is half the excursion.

03

Berchtesgaden town holds the valley’s full range: historic inns and the Hofbräuhaus-equivalent Gasthäuser around the old market, the Aadla fine-dining room, and the pedestrian zone’s cafés and bakeries. The Alm- und Bergfilm festival season fills the tables in autumn.

04

Ramsau’s lane carries the painted church’s taverns and the Hintersee’s lakeside inn; the Jenner mid-station and summit restaurants do the panorama lunch; and the Obersalzberg’s hotels (the InterContinental’s terrace above all) serve the Eagle’s Nest view with dinner. Camping kitchens are well served by the town’s markets; Camping Grafenlehen and the Allweglehen pitches put national-park trails at the tent flap.

HOTELS & STAYS

Where to stay nearby

01

Berchtesgaden town is the practical base: station, buses and old town within walking distance, the full price range, and the ski-bus and lake-bus loops at the door — right for first visits and public-transport travellers.

02

Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden, 10 minutes south, is the postcard stay: the painted St. Sebastian church, the Zauberwald’s edge, farm stays and the Hintersee’s quiet — the choice for walkers who want trails from the door.

03

The Königssee shore (Königssee village and the Jennerbahn base) puts the lake at the doorstep for early boats; the Obersalzberg hotels trade the Eagle’s-Nest-height views and direct Dokumentation access for a drive to everything else.

04

Camping: Camping Grafenlehen (4-star, at the Königssee valley’s entrance under the Jenner, national-park partner site) and the Allweglehen campsite and motorhome park (below the Obersalzberg, panoramic pitches, year-round service) are the region’s verified grounds — both put the RVO bus lines within minutes and the trails within walking distance.
