ABOUT THIS ITINERARY

Two days let the district breathe: the castles taken seriously on the first day, the second split between the Wieskirche’s rococo calm and the lakes’ outdoor afternoon — with Füssen’s old town as the evening of either day.

THE SCHEDULE

Day by day

Day 1

The Royal Castles and the Alpsee

Neuschwanstein’s first-slot tour and Marienbrücke in the morning, Hohenschwangau after lunch, and the Alpsee’s shore and bays for the afternoon and evening.

  1. Morning

    Neuschwanstein Castle

    3–4 hours

First timed slot (9 a.m. ideal): the Serpentinenweg ascent, the guided tour’s finished rooms, and Marienbrücke’s silhouette view before the bridge crowds.

  2. Midday

    Hohenschwangau Castle

    1.5–2 hours

Lunch in the village, then the childhood castle’s guided tour — the frescoed rooms that planted Ludwig’s dreams and explain the morning’s fantasy.

  3. Afternoon

    Alpsee circuit and swim

    2 hours

The hour-long shore walk beneath the castle, swimming at the western bays, the Tegelberg mirrored in the green water.

  4. Evening

    Dinner in Füssen old town

    Open

The bus or walk back to Füssen: the old town lanes at dusk and a Bavarian dinner in a historic parlour or the Brauhaus.

GETTING AROUND

Bus 73/78 runs Füssen station → Hohenschwangau every 20–30 minutes in season; the whole day otherwise runs on foot. Drivers use the paid Hohenschwangau car parks. The evening return to Füssen is a 10-minute bus or a 40-minute lake-and-river walk.

Day 2

Wieskirche, Linderhof and the Lakes

The UNESCO Wieskirche’s rococo interior in the morning quiet, the scenic Plansee crossing to Linderhof’s palace and gardens, and the lakes’ outdoor afternoon — Tegelberg cable car, luge or an Alpsee-For ggensee bike loop as the closing act.

  1. Morning

    Wieskirche

    1–1.5 hours

The rococo masterpiece in its morning quiet: the dome fresco, the gilded stucco, the audio guide, the meadow setting at the best light.

  2. Midday

    Linderhof Palace

    2–3 hours

The scenic drive or bus across the Plansee; the timed palace tour, the water parterre’s terraces and the park’s follies.

  3. Afternoon

    Tegelberg or the lakes

    2–3 hours

Back to Schwangau: cable car to the Tegelberg terrace and the luge down, or the Alpsee-For ggensee bike loop with a swim — the weather decides.

GETTING AROUND

A car makes this day easy; without one, the RTB regional buses link Füssen–Wieskirche–Linderhof on summer schedules (verify times — the link thins outside high season). Bus 73/78 covers the evening lakes legs. Total driving without the castles is under 90 minutes.

FOOD & DRINK

Where to eat nearby

01

The district eats Allgäu-Bavarian: Kässpatzen (the region’s cheese noodles, worth ordering twice), Maultaschen, roast pork with knödel, trout from the Forggensee and the Lech, and the Allgäu’s famous cheeses in every form from Obatzda to the alpine-style cuts on a Brettljause.

02

Hohenschwangau village beneath the castles runs the visitor trade: hotel restaurants with terrace views of both castles, café counters for the ticket-queue lunch, and the classic Bavarian rooms at the Müller and Alpenrose am See. Prices carry the location; quality is honest.

03

Füssen’s old town is the better, cheaper table: the Ritterstube and its neighbours serve full regional menus in historic rooms, the Herzogliches Brauhaus pours its own beers beside the abbey, and the pedestrian zone holds cafés, bakeries and Italian kitchens for variety. The Lech falls’ riverside beer garden is the summer locals’ spot.

04

In the countryside, the Wieskirche’s inn and the Linderhof palace restaurant cover their sights; the Tegelberg’s summit house does the Bavarian card with a 2,000-metre view; and the Camping Brunnen and Bannwaldsee sites put self-catering kitchens within reach of the lake shores. Reserve dinners in Hohenschwangau in season — the village empties its tables early.

HOTELS & STAYS

Where to stay nearby

01

Hohenschwangau village is the castle-experience base: wake to the towers, first in the ticket line, the lakes a short walk away — and the price premium and evening quiet that come with it. The Müller and Alpenrose am See hold the classic castle-view rooms.

02

Füssen old town suits value and evening life: historic-town guesthouses and hotels within the walls, restaurants and cafés at the door, the High Castle overhead, and the castles a 10-minute bus or a scenic 40-minute walk away. The town’s hotels run noticeably cheaper than the village.

03

The lake shores carry the district’s resort and camping strip: Camping Brunnen (5-star, on the Forggensee at Schwangau-Brunnen, open year-round, lake swimming from the site) and the Campingplatz Bannwaldsee (5-star, directly on the Bannwaldsee’s southern shore with the royal castles in view) are the region’s verified campgrounds, both served by the local bus line; the Forggensee hotels add sailing and cycling from the door.

04

For multi-day Allgäu travellers, Schwangau village (between the lakes and the castles) splits the difference: quieter than Hohenschwangau, closer than Füssen, with farm-stay rooms and the Tegelberg at the end of the street. Book months ahead for the July–August peak and the Christmas market weekends; the district’s bed base is small for its fame.
