ABOUT THIS ITINERARY

A big day out that shows why Carinthia is the hinge of the Alps: two countries, three cultures, a turquoise lake and a mountain pass, all within 150 km of driving.

OVERVIEW

The route at a glance

Out west on the A11 to Villach and Lake Faak, lunch at the three-country corner, then over the Wurzen Pass (1,073 m) into neighbouring Slovenia for the afternoon in Kranjska Gora at the gateway of Triglav National Park, returning by the Karawanken tunnel or the same pass. About 170 km total.

THE SCHEDULE

Day by day

Day 1

Austria → Slovenia → Austria

  1. 08:30

    Villach old town

    1.5 h

Coffee on the Hauptplatz of the Drau city — Klagenfurt’s western sibling, 30 minutes away on the A11.

  2. 10:15

    Faaker See

    2 h

Swim at Austria’s turquoise lake beneath the Dobratsch; the island in the bay is the only one in Austria with a village on it.

  3. 13:00

    Dreiländereck & Tarvisio (Italy)

    2 h

Stand at the tri-border point of Austria, Slovenia and Italy, or continue 15 minutes to Tarvisio in Italy for lunch.

  4. 15:00

    Wurzen Pass into Slovenia

    1 h

The old border pass (1,073 m, 18 % gradient) with its Cold-War tank memorial drops to Podkoren at the Slovenian border.

  5. 16:00

    Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

    2 h

In the neighbouring country: coffee by Lake Jasna under the Julian Alps, in the town our full Slovenia guide covers in depth — 40 minutes from Klagenfurt but a world away.

  6. 18:30

    Return via Karawanken tunnel

    1 h

Back through the 7.9 km tunnel (≈€7 toll) to the A2 and Klagenfurt for a late lakeside dinner.
