ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Villach is the second city of Carinthia and the practical capital of the Alps-Adriatic crossroads — Austria, Italy and Slovenia meet barely half an hour away in three different directions, and the city wears that history in its Italianate arcades and café terraces. Ten kilometres south, Lake Faak turns an improbable Caribbean turquoise in summer, ringed by beaches, campsites and the twin castles of Landskron and Finkenstein, with the Dobratsch massif and its panoramic alpine road filling the western sky. This is the corner of Carinthia where a morning swim, a mountain hike and a dinner in another country all fit into one day.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Villach grew at a Drau crossing on the Roman road from Aquileia — the springs of Warmbad hosted the mansio Sanctium — and was granted to the prince-bishops of Bamberg in 1007, whose Italy-trade tolls made it Carinthia’s richest town by 1240. The great Friuli earthquake of 1348 wrecked the town (and shook the greatest rockfall in the Eastern Alps off the Dobratsch); the Protestant merchant exodus after 1600 broke that wealth; and 37 Allied bombings in the Second World War destroyed 85 % of the buildings, rebuilt faithfully after 1945. The railway age of 1864 made Villach Austria’s southern rail hub — a role it keeps — and in 1997 it became the first Alpine Town of the Year.

NATURE & WILDLIFE

The Living Landscape

The city limits stretch from the 2,166 m Dobratsch down to two warm lakes. The Dobratsch nature park (since 2002) protects 8,100 hectares with ibex, golden eagles, over 700 plant species and the sand viper at its northernmost European outpost; its alpine garden displays 900 high-mountain plants. Faaker See’s water is drinking quality, renewed every 1.8 years, and the reed beds host herons and little grebes; the Ossiach Tauern between the lakes keeps red deer and woodpeckers. The macaques of the Affenberg are a managed colony, not wild wildlife.
