ABOUT THIS ITINERARY

Kravica is a single, focused destination, and a half day is the ideal way to take it in without rushing. This itinerary follows the shape of a visit: it begins at the main viewpoint for the full width of the horseshoe cascade, moves down to the basin at the base of the falls, and takes a quieter walk along the Trebižat riverbank above and below. Swimming in the pool beneath the falls is the optional addition — dependent on the current rules, the water and weather conditions and safety on the day, and not a guaranteed part of the visit. Check the current official admission and opening information before you travel, as access, opening and any charges can change. The falls are most powerful in spring, after rain and snowmelt, and the half day pairs naturally with Međugorje, Počitelj, Blagaj or Mostar for a full Herzegovina day.

OVERVIEW

The route at a glance

The half day moves from the viewpoint to the basin to the riverbank. You begin at the main viewpoint for the classic composition — the full 120-metre width of the horseshoe cascade, the green curtain of vegetation over the limestone cliff and the basin below. From there the route moves down to the basin at the base of the falls, the closest view of the curtain of water and the warm-season swimming area, when conditions allow. A quieter walk along the Trebižat riverbank above and below the falls completes the visit, the gentle layer that complements the focused sight of the cascade.

The times are guidance, not a schedule. Swimming is optional and dependent on the current rules, the water and weather conditions and safety on the day — treat it as an addition, not a certainty. Check the current official admission and opening information before you travel.

THE SCHEDULE

Day by day

Day 1

Kravica Waterfall in Half a Day

A viewpoint-to-riverbank route — the main viewpoint and horseshoe cascade, the basin, the Trebižat riverbank, and swimming as an optional addition.

  1. Morning

The main viewpoint and the horseshoe cascade

    45–60 min

Begin at the main viewpoint for the full width of the Kravica horseshoe — a curtain of water some 120 metres wide and 25 metres high, tumbling over a limestone cliff hung with green vegetation into a natural amphitheatre. The viewpoint gives the classic composition and the certain sight of the falls, the one experience that does not depend on swimming conditions. The light is best in the morning, when the cascade is lit and the crowds are smaller. Check the current official admission and opening information before you travel.

  2. Late morning

The basin and an optional swim

    30–60 min

Move down to the basin at the base of the falls, the closest view of the curtain of water and the warm-season swimming area. Swimming in the pool is optional and dependent on the current rules, the water and weather conditions and safety on the day — the current can be strong, the pool is rocky, and swimming may be closed at any time. Wear water shoes for the rocky pool if you swim, and treat the swim as an optional addition rather than a guaranteed part of the visit. Check the current official information before you travel.

  3. Late morning

    The Trebižat riverbank

    45–60 min

Take a quieter walk along the green banks of the Trebižat above and below the falls, the river that builds the cascade, seen away from the main platforms. The banks give a gentler view of the river and the vegetation, and a pleasant walk that complements the focused sight of the horseshoe. The ground can be damp and uneven, so wear shoes with grip. The exact coordinates of a single canonical visitor point on the riverbank are not independently verified, so the walk is left unlocated on the map; the banks run above and below the falls.

GETTING AROUND

The viewpoint, the basin and the riverbank are all reached on foot from the parking area; no transport is needed within the site. A car or arranged transport is useful to reach Kravica and to combine it with Međugorje, Počitelj, Blagaj or Mostar.

EAT & DRINK

A small number of cafés and food stands may be open near the falls in the high season; plan a simple Herzegovinian lunch and a slow Bosnian coffee, and check current opening with the operator. Carry water for the exposed approach in summer. Ljubuški and the Međugorje area offer a wider choice of restaurants a short drive away.

SEASONAL NOTES

When to go

Spring (April to June) gives the fullest water, when the falls are most powerful after rain and snowmelt, and is the most comfortable season for the riverbank walk. Summer is the busiest season and the time when swimming is possible, conditions allowing; the falls are busiest on hot summer weekends, so mornings are the quieter time. Autumn is mild and quieter. Winter is quiet and the cascade is at its most atmospheric, though some facilities may be reduced. Check the current official admission and opening information before you travel, as access, opening and any charges can change.
