ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Kravica is a waterfall on the Trebižat river in western Herzegovina, near the town of Ljubuški, where the river tumbles over a broad limestone cliff into a natural amphitheatre below. The falls form a wide horseshoe some 120 metres across and 25 metres high, with a curtain of green vegetation hanging over the rock and a pool at the base. It is one of the most photographed natural sights in Herzegovina, and a protected natural monument. For a visitor it is a single, focused destination — a short walk from the road to a cascade that is best seen in spring, when the water is fullest. Swimming in the pool beneath the falls is possible in the warm months, but it is optional and dependent on the current rules, the water and weather conditions and safety on the day; check the current official admission and opening information before you travel, as access, opening and any charges can change.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Kravica is a natural waterfall on the Trebižat, a river that runs through the karst of western Herzegovina, and the cascade was shaped by the deposition of travertine — the same limestone-building process that formed many of the region’s waterfalls. It was protected as a natural monument, and in recent decades it has become one of the most visited natural sights in Herzegovina, with basic visitor facilities and a seasonal swimming area at its base. The current admission arrangements, opening times and any charges can change, so check the current official information before you travel.

What to Wear & Bring

Sturdy shoes with grip for the walk to the platforms and the damp riverbank; a swimsuit, towel and water shoes if you plan to swim, when conditions allow; a hat and water for the exposed approach in summer; and some cash (BAM), as admission and small cafés may prefer cash.

The viewing platforms are reached by a short walk from the parking area, with some uneven and sloping ground in places. The basin and the riverbank are uneven, damp and rocky, and swimming is in a natural, unguarded pool.
