ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The beaches of Neum are small and modest, as befits a town with only a short stretch of coast, but they are the reason most visitors come. Around Neum Bay and the small peninsula that shelters it, a handful of beaches, bathing platforms and rocky coves give access to the clear, warm water of the Adriatic. Some are concrete bathing areas and small pebble strips directly below the waterfront hotels and promenade; others, like the beaches on the southern side of the Neum peninsula, are quieter coves reached by a short walk or a descent from the road. The water is sheltered within the bay, warm through the summer, and clear enough to make swimming the natural activity of a stay. None of the beaches is large, and Neum is not a beach-destination on the scale of the Croatian coast nearby, but for a visitor they are the seaside layer of a Herzegovina trip — the only place in the country where the sea can be reached, swum in and rested beside.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The beaches of Neum developed alongside the town’s growth as a coastal resort in the second half of the 20th century. As hotels and tourist facilities were built along the bay, small bathing areas, concrete platforms and pebble strips were laid out below them to give visitors direct access to the sea, and the coves around the Neum peninsula were used for quieter swimming away from the centre. After Bosnia & Herzegovina became independent, Neum’s beaches took on an added significance as the country’s only seawater bathing spots, and they remain the principal draw of the town in the summer season. The beaches are small and largely unchanged in scale, maintained as modest, local bathing places rather than developed resort beaches.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The bay beaches below the waterfront — the small pebble strips and bathing platforms directly beneath the promenade and hotels, the easiest swimming in Neum.
The coves of the Neum peninsula — the quieter beaches on the southern side of the peninsula, reached by a short walk or descent from the road.
The clarity and warmth of the water — the sheltered Adriatic water of the bay, warm through the summer and clear enough to make swimming the natural activity.
The rocky, indented coast — the shoreline around Neum, where small coves and rocks alternate with the beaches, the karst-meets-sea character of the coast.
The scale of the coast — the short, modest stretch of shore that is the country’s only seafront, read honestly rather than overstated.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The beaches are the practical reason Neum exists as a destination at all: they are the only place in Bosnia & Herzegovina where the sea can be reached and swum in. They are small and quiet rather than grand, and reading them at that scale is the key to enjoying them — a modest, sheltered seaside on the Adriatic, and the sole seawater layer of a Herzegovina journey.
