ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Palmanova’s calendar turns the fortress back into what it was: the Festa del Redentore fills the square and bastions with 17th-century costumes, flag games and duels each July; “Palma alle Armi”, the great September reenactment, brings hundreds of costumed soldiers, cannon and Napoleon himself (in 1809 the siege the festival replays actually happened) to the spianata outside Porta Cividale; and on the last Sunday of March the UNESCO Cities Marathon runs exactly 42.195 km connecting Palmanova, Aquileia and Cividale — the only marathon in the world between three World Heritage sites.
