ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The walls are Palmanova’s park: a four-kilometre ring of grass-topped ramparts, moats and tree-lined bastion paths, open on foot or by bike at every hour, with interpretive boards explaining each work of the war machine — bastion after named bastion (Donato, Aquileia, Udine, Cividale, Garzoni…), ravelins in the moat, and the Napoleonic lunettes outside. A €3 ticket (free with the FVG Card) opens the best-preserved stretch: the underground countermine galleries of the Rivellino and the great Donato bastion, where multimedia projections and historical characters reconstruct the siege. The Museum of the Great War and the Fortress, above Porta Cividale, completes the military story from 1593 to the 20th century.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The countermine galleries were the fortress’s hidden weapon: tunnels driven under the outworks so that defenders could hear, meet and blow up enemy miners. The Bastion Park repurposes the whole defensive ring as a landscape monument — one of the largest green rings of any Italian town — and the fortress museum above Porta Cividale gathers relics from every garrison that ever held the star: Venetian, Napoleonic, Austrian and Italian.
