ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Pazin Castle is the most substantial castle in Istria — a hilltop fortress first recorded in 983, its round tower and curtain walls looming over the abyss that made the town famous. Today it houses the Ethnographic Museum of Istria: peasant costume, kitchen and workshop reconstructions, the story of the tousands of Istrians who emigrated across a century, and a room devoted to the battle of the castle’s own legend, Jules Verne’s Mathias Sandorf.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The castle enters written history in 983 under the name Castrum Pisinum, held by the bishops of Poreč, then the Counts of Gorizia, then — from 1374 for four centuries — the Habsburgs, whose outpost it remained against Venice until the republic fell. Because it changed hands so little, it never had to be rebuilt: the walls, the round tower and the palace keep their medieval lines. In the 19th century the castle became the administrative heart of Austrian Istria — the reason Pazin, not a bigger coastal town, is the region’s capital today. The museum opened in 1962 and has filled the rooms since.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

This is the definitive castle of inland Istria — the best preserved, the oldest recorded, and the administrative reason the peninsula’s capital sits at its green centre rather than on the coast.
