ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Below Pazin the ground simply opens: the Pazinčica river, often a modest stream, falls into a horseshoe canyon of grey and green walls, and at its heart disappears into the Pazin Abyss — a karst cave mouth that swallowed the river’s water into Istria’s underground forever. It is the most dramatic piece of geology in inland Istria, a legal bungee and zipline venue in summer, a hiking circuit all year, and — after heavy rain — the sight of the abyss churning as the cave fills.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The abyss has been Pazin’s identity since the middle ages, but it entered world literature in 1885, when Jules Verne chose it as the escape route of Mathias Sandorf: his hero, pursued through the gorge, enters the cave, rides the underground river and emerges at the coast. Verne never saw Istria; his description came from traveller accounts and the cave’s legend. Dante is often — if more doubtfully — claimed for the gorge too. The hydrology was finally mapped in the 20th century: the Pazinčica’s waters feed the springs of the Raša river on the opposite, eastern coast, crossing the whole peninsula underground.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The gorge is the reason Pazin exists and the single most striking natural feature of inland Istria — and one of the few karst abysses you can walk into without caving gear.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Getting There
The gorge paths begin beside the castle; a five-minute walk from the town centre. The zipline launches from the castle side.
How Long
An hour for the loop to the abyss and back; half a day with the zipline and viewpoints.
Access
The canyon path is steep, rocky and slippery when wet — proper shoes essential. The zipline has weight limits; book in season.
Costs
The gorge paths are free; the zipline is priced per ride. After heavy rain the cave area may be closed.
