ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Tvrdoš is the medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery that sits in a green, vineyard-covered valley beside the Trebišnjica, a short drive upstream of Trebinje. Founded in the 15th century on the site of an earlier church, it is the seat of the diocese of Zahumlje and Herzegovina, and one of the spiritual centres of the Serb Orthodox community in the region. The monastery is built of pale stone in the familiar compact form, with a church, a bell tower and monastic quarters around a courtyard, and it carries the quiet, lived-in atmosphere of a place that has been continuously inhabited for centuries. What brings most visitors today, though, is what lies beneath it: the monastery’s working wine cellars, cut into the living rock, where the monks make the Žilavka and Vranac wines that have carried the name of the Trebinje region across Herzegovina and beyond.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

A church stood on this site from at least the early medieval period, and the present monastery was founded in the 15th century, before the Ottoman conquest, as a community of the Serbian Orthodox church. It became the seat of the diocese of Zahumlje and Herzegovina, a role it still holds today. The monastery was damaged and rebuilt more than once across the Ottoman and later periods, and the present church and buildings reflect centuries of repair and renewal on the original foundations. Wine has been made here for centuries — the Trebinje region’s viticulture reaches back to Roman times, and the monastery’s cellars, carved into the hillside, are among the oldest working wine cellars in Herzegovina. Today the monks continue to tend the surrounding vineyards and to make and age wine in those cellars, carrying on a tradition that long predates the modern revival of Herzegovinian wine.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The church — a compact medieval stone church with frescoes and icons; step inside to see the painted decoration and the quiet interior of a working monastery.

02

The wine cellars — the rock-cut cellars beneath the monastery, where the monks age Žilavka and Vranac in wooden barrels; the cellar is the heart of the visit for most travellers.

03

The vineyards and valley — the monastery sits among its own vines beside the Trebišnjica; the setting is one of the greenest, calmest corners of the Trebinje area.

04

The courtyard and bell tower — the monastic quarters and the bell tower around the courtyard give the complex its quiet, lived-in character.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Tvrdoš matters because it holds two of the things that define the Trebinje region in one place: the medieval Orthodox faith of Herzegovina, and the wine that has been grown here since Roman times. The monastery is the seat of the local diocese and one of the oldest continuously used spiritual sites in the region, and its cellars are a living link to a viticulture that was nearly lost and is now being reborn. For a visitor it is the place where the religious and the agricultural history of the Trebinje plain meet — and the easiest place to taste both.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
Tvrdoš stands about five kilometres upstream of Trebinje along the Trebišnjica, reached by car or taxi along a riverside road that leads to the monastery entrance; confirm current access and visiting arrangements before a dedicated visit.
Visiting
The monastery is an active place of worship; dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and observe quietly in the church. Wine tasting in the cellars may be possible — confirm with the monastery beforehand rather than assuming it is available.
Best Time
Spring to autumn is best, when the vineyards are green and the cellars are most active around the harvest; mornings are quietest.
Context
Combine Tvrdoš with a wider wine afternoon at the commercial cellars on the hills above Trebinje, or with a morning in the old town and the Arslanagić Bridge.
