ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Umag’s swimming is a string of pine-shaded coves running north from the old town: the town beach by the harbour, the pebble bays of Katoro, and the resort coast of Stella Maris beyond. The water is calm and clear, the entries are a mix of pebble and rock, and the pines give shade through most of the afternoon.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Katoro peninsula carries the remains of a Roman villa rustica — the coast here has been the summer address since antiquity — and the modern beach-and-pine landscape took shape with the tourist boom of the 1970s, when the Stella Maris resort and its tennis complex were laid out along the bays.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Katoro-to-Stella-Maris coast is the reason Umag works as a resort town — swimming, shade and tennis within one long walk of a Venetian old town.
